Gms1 & k&n sri

Anyone out there running a GMS1 and K&N Typhoon SRI? What is your experience with it? I'm thinking about putting the Typhoon on my GMS1 tuned Cobalt, and I'd like to hear what you all think about it.

Thanks!

Youl probably gain a little power. You should feel it too, but don't expect a huge gain. Also your car will run fine with it, the k&n doesn't throw fuel trims off that bad.

Forgot to mention your gas milage will go down because Youl enjoy hearing the turbo and bpv too much.

Before I was tuned for my K&N my LTFTs were +10 to +11. I didn't like that at all.

I rotated the filter a lot. Finally Vince just tuned it out. I can't say for GMS1 but my experience wasn't nice.

I love it. There's nothing wrong with your LTFTs being throw off as long as it settles on a number and stays there. If you find your LTFT fluctuating over time between say, 5 and 15 as an example, then your STFTs are still wildly erratic and you could be having issues. As has been mentioned in nearly every KN thread, filter orientation has a big effect on how your fuel trims will be affected.

What are LTFT/STFT and how do you know what numerical value they are?

You can only see it with hptuners or an interceptor gague. I wouldn't worry about it.

They are your long and short term fuel trim adjustments. Long term is essentially a semi-permanent adjustment based on your average short term readings, and both will be affected by pretty much every intake out there. A larger diameter (which most intakes have compared to stock) will reduce air velocity, which will in turn reduce MAF reading. Your car will be getting more air than it thinks, and will start to run lean. As a result, it will add more fuel to compensate, and your trims will increase. Ideally your LTFT will adjust and stabilize, and your car will run as good as stock. There is literally nothing to worry about. You can tune it out by tweaking the fuel delivery, but there is absolutely no need to. You're just doing with a tune what the computer has done already.

Some intakes also cause significant turbulence around the MAF, which means the velocity could vary and it can never get a stable reading. Since your STFTs will be all over the place, your LTFT may never stabilize, and your car may never run as smooth or good as stock.

As Dart said, you can check them with HP Tuners, scan gauges, or if you have an Android phone, you can use the Torque app and a bluetooth code reader. The app is 5 bucks and the code readers start at about 30 for the cheap Chinese knock-offs.

Great info! About how long does it usually take for the computer to adjust to the new intake? Do the K&N SRI's run the turbulence risk stated above?

I've seen mine take about a hundred miles or so. And I don't think the KN has any issues with turbulence - it's slightly bigger and if it's aligned right you should see your LTFT settle in around 8-10% positive. The filter itself has a metal seam connecting the cone...using that as your top, I believe most people have success orienting it at about the 11 o'clock position. (i.e. line it up straight, and give it a slight twist to the left).

If u position your filter at 11 o clock you will be fine. After you installed the intake turn the car on and let it idle for like 10 mins without giving it any gas.

Its also good to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery before install and reconnect it after. It resets your ecu and the car will "learn" the intake faster.

Ok, this is going to be a really dumb question but since the ecu will reset will my GMS1 tune still be active or do you have to reflash it?

That's what Flash really means, anyway. Memory that stays the same when powered off is Flash memory. The term came from the inventor because it reminded him of the flash of a camera.

Your 12:00 mark should be the metal line along the pleats in the filter. It's kind of like the seam that holds it together. I believe with that up, your KN logo on the end will actually be upside down. Get it to that point, and give a slight rotation left.

i had mine positioned wrong for a while and was getting some misfires.
i read somewhere that 12:30 was the best position to place the seam and this was by Gremlin 85 i believe....but after doing that my car has been running great.

i ran the k&n sri with gms1. it was fine. never had an issue, and not even sure if i had it in the 11 o'clock position as mentioned above. i did notice that u have to give the car more gas to get it going. so just to let you know u might be giving up some gas mileage. it was fun hearing the bpv...

does anyone have any logs to prove that 11 oclock is the best position for the filter?

Just ordered my Typhoon! Can't wait to get it in. I got it for $205 which I feel was a really good deal. If anyone is looking at buying one here is the link to the website where I bought it.

That is a pretty sick deal. Now if I could only find one with half decent shipping to Canada Id be all over it.
