How to gut cats?
How to gut cats?
Just curious how people went about doing this? I want it to look stock from the outside for any visual checks, but be free flowing, do you just kock out all the cat material with whatever will work and fit?
Thanks!
Thanks!
That^
Personally I would just buy an aftermarket down pipe. Bigger, better flow, made for performance, etc. Plus if you have an LNF if I remember correctly you have two of them. Get a pipe or something I guess, never have really done it hah.

this is a car forum and you do know that cat means catalytic converter?
anyways i would just get a new downpipe and swap them whenever need be, or get an aftermarket downpipe with a high flow car.

This, so you might want to check the motor vehicle stats for your province as that does not sound right. Because you can't get away with out one in BC
take a long metal rod and just keep banging it into the inside of the pipe. you can loosen some of it up by hitting the outside of the pipe with a rubber mallet. after about 30 minutes, you should have that **** all over the floor
dont ask how i know

There is a downpipe thread on here where someone tested all kinds of combos. Short of buying an aftermarket Catless downpipe the best performance was cutting open the stock cats and welding in a pipe after you gut them. Looks factory but won't pass a sniffer obviously
I use a 5.5" skinning knife. Damascus steel, ironwood handle.
I typically start at the inner thigh and work my way down to the cemterline. Then i just cut the main line and drop all the goods out.

Just use a pipe some gloves to pound out the material. I'd use a breather mask or a bandan or something across you mouth and nose. Get new gaskets Also.
When I bought my car cats were hollowed out by the previous owner.(I bought it with 4 k) :/
It will throw a code obviously unless tuned out. The problem with hollowing out the stock pipe is it is still pretty restrictive even with no cats due the the crush they put in the pipe also. The pipe is 2.5 and crushes down to 2" in a spot. That bottle neck makes it better to just get a catless pipe IMO.

Whatever you do, see if you can find someone who has the same setup. I threw a catless x-pipe on a v8 car I had. Sounded awesome until I realized it droned like an army of killer bees @ 70 mph... so yeah, make sure you're ok with it being super loud.
I just did this.
Go buy a 2.75 inch piece of pipe from O'Reilly or similar.
Take that pipe and stick it in the end of the downpipe and push it through the cat.
I actually just put on gloves and pushed it in while doing a screw type action. It will go through. Take about 10 -15 min. Your arm will get tired.
Wear gloves. I did it on a lift.
Supposodly, doing it this way you will have a 2.75" hole in the cat, and material on the edges that will heat up and seem like it's working to the average joe.
EDIT: You only need to do the rear cat. It was found that gutting both causes a loss of low end torque. It's nice just gutting the rear because you don't have to remove the downpipe just unhook the rear.
