I am getting a Trifecta Tune and a ZZP DP!
As most of you know I am into road racing and have the GMS1 installed. A couple weeks ago under hot and muggy conditions I had some knocking (detonation) issues on the track at 3000rpm WOT.
I took the car in to my dealer who told me everything seems normal and that it could be bad gas. They made a note on my file and sent me home.
So I contacted Vince via Email and asked him for 2 tunes to keep me safe on the track. One conservative for those hot days and a strong tune for normal days. The tunes are here, just waiting for the cable.
In order to limit lag, I decided to go with the ZZP spun metal cat modular setup. This way I can take the cat off for regular lapping and really kick ass.
As for power my car made around 245 WHP stock as per the GPS data-logging of the CCC of Solosprint in 2009.
Tomorrow we are putting her on the dyno at SHM to get some base GMS1 numbers. As soon as I get the EZ cable and DP she will go back to the dyno. Hopefully by this weekend I should have everything in place.
Just wondering, how many logs on average does it take to dial her in? And can we limit TQ in 2nd with a tune or is that for 1st only?
What do you guys think, did I do the right thing going with a Tune when I have the GMS1. How much better is the Trifecta?
update Ran my car on the dyno today. GMS1 is total garbage. Power curve ia all wrong for what I want to do.
270WHP, 303WTQ max power. Will try to post the chart later.
5 x 2nd gear pulls

and 5 x 3rd gear pulls.

You will feel a difference and there will be no knock. Took me like 4 logs to get it right.
You would probly be better off running reduced boost in 1st and 2nd gear rather than using the tq management. Remember to have him lower your cooling fan temp as well. I think I had mine lowered to 199*
Why not just go straight catless?? Then you could turn off the cat over temp and gain some top end on those extended periods of wot like on straights

Yeah you did it right by buying the zzp dp, you should just buy the catless one though but whatev. lol
The Trifecta Tune is very good from what I've heard so you will be fine I'm sure

I don't think anyone can say with 100% confidence you will see 0 knock. How many of us on here drive our cars under the conditions yours sees on an almost weekly basis? I think it's fair to say slim to none
. If I'm not mistaken the Trifecta tune richens up the AFR @ WOT from ~14.0 -> somewhere in the ballpark of 12.8 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so this may help under track conditions when the motor temperatures are constantly rising and a leaner mixture may therefore be more prone to detonation (again, someone can tell me if I'm out in left field).
That said, by going custom tune you will have far more control over how the power comes on so you have the freedom to make modifications to it until you feel like everything is setup the way you want it for track days, and with select-a-tune you could leave GMS1 as your primary tune (DD), and your custom tune for track days, neat idea imo!
Is having this tune going to push you into a different class for Solosprint this year, or do they consider it the same as GMS1 as long as the HP/TQ numbers are similar?

It would be awesome to meet up with some of you fellow ontario guys!
I bought the catless ZZP downpipe....I don't think there is a point of having a cat, if you need the vehicle emissions tested, save the original and bolt it back in...
I have the GMS1 tune, and haven't ever experienced knock. I have run some hot laps in my car, but probably not even close to the abuse venom09 has done in his car.
Let me know how the trifecta tune goes, I've been a little hesitant of going aftermarket for that....kinda nervous...

My first tune was good no tweaking required, Vince looked at the logs and said there was no adjustments necessary. At my Auto-X event this weekend I'll do some more logging and send it too him just to be sure the tune is running prime.
I'm just figuring out that track racing is what I want to do. The GMS1 is quite good, any more wheelspin in 2nd would be completely useless. However, it would be nice to get a good strong tune which i can activate with cruise control on the straights when I have to catch those super fast cars. We will see how it goes.

Today on the dyno she was knocking again.
As long as you keep the RPMS high you should be fine. For some that is "not too bad", But I blew a VERY expensive motor once because of detonating... So for me a little is too much...hehe

That's sounds like a good idea. The GMS1 tune is quite lean in the mid range which is probably why your seeing knock around 3k RPM's. Trifecta tune is a much better tune.

I've never had or been in a car with GMS1 but I do know that it is a better tune hands down just from looking at dyno readouts and 1/4 trap speeds and testimonials. Also the Trifecta tune is richer than stock and GMS1 throughout the entire RPM band so you should have no knocking at all.
For GT1 this year I need to run a cat or loose the swaybar. That Is why I got the the ZZP modular setup, now I can swap and play depending on track. More power or more handling...

You do not have to race it to experience knock. Bad conditions (95+F and 85+ humidity)between 3500 and 4500 rpm going WOT in a high gear to pass a car will do it. Just listen for that faint "KRRRP" sound.

I go to TMP for Friday evening lapping now and then. I`ll try and pm you next time I go.
Does your car pull better up top now? Today on the Dyno the GMS1 was pure garbage! Makes decent power in the mid-range but falls on it"s face after 5500rpm. Kind of forcing you to stay in the lower (read dangerous) rpms. Still cannot believe GM is this reckless

.Turbo overspeed protection. GM has the max airload torque backed off to 62-66% up top. Tuners change that to 100% to help it hold power better up top. As for knocking the A/F is very lean in the midrange a 14.0 but there is very little timing run 5-7* in the midrange. Most tuners richen it to 12.5-13.0 and add timing.
It is here. ZZP modular DP, Trifecta cable and my new netbook, Aeroforce Intercepter.
Was I suppose to buy the offroad pipe extra with the modular V band setup?

Inside the spun metal cat.

I admit, the lure of more power from an additional tune is tempting, but at the same time, I've tuned my own cars in the past, and unless you watch your knock and other values like a hawk, it just shouldn't be done. For me, I would prefer to know that I can beat up on it and still have the warranty. Here's a post from Bill, one of the engineers that worked on the LNF upgrade kit.

I may still get a tune sometime down the road, but at that point, I will have to be willing to swap the turbo if it blows. Once it's custom tune, all warranty bets go out the window. You can try to bullshit your way to warranty, but it's a horrible thing to do. Pay to play, or don't play.
I know a few things about the LNF kit that make me stay with it for now. Bill has said learn down is gone, GM has to honor warranty on it, and it's only running a modest amount of boost. Quite frankly, the car doesn't have enough traction or brakes (needs ducts) on track to justify much more power.

The GMS1 is NOT safe for open track in my car. I had detonation twice already on different track days. Both days conditions were in the 90`s with humidity over 85%. Also last week on the dyno it happened after the 8th pull.
On run 10 she was knocking so bad power went down to 237/282. Take a look at my charts in the first post.
I am looking for safe and reliable power with no detonation. Anything over 237/282 is a bonus lol. 300 would be nice!

I think GM saying that the turbo cannot go over the certain value is not quite correct.
GMS1 in hot temperaturs down south is netting people 24psi in some cases. Up here in Canada, the most I think I have ever hit knowingly is about 20psi. I think a custom tune with 22 23 psi is probably safe.
How are your numbers so low venom?
I raced a mazdaspeed 3 last week who was at 298whp, and I beat him by a bus length. I have GMS1, K&N, ZZP Catless...
