I love my SS/TC but I hate the sound of the clutch when shifting
I dont know if this is normal but it sounds like sh-t. Im at 1200 miles and I still hear the loud noise when shifting. I have never heard this noise in any of my other cars I had while shifting but it does not sound right. Does anyone else hear the noise while upshifting especially from 1st-2nd-3rd? Is this normal or is there something wrong with these SS/TC's? I want to make sure before I start modding this thing so its still covered under warranty. Post your opinions on the clutch while shifting.
It's a complaint, but not a problem with the car. I have the same thing with mine and it's been exactly the same for 2300kms. It's the same as people "complaining" about the loud ticking noise under the hood (direct injection does that, you have to get over it). I'm sure there is a reason for the clutch sound. Someone say something please.
If you have ever owned a car with a high performance clutch before then you will recognize the noise. The clutch in the TC is different then the SC and it is bigger and has more holding power. The noise comes with the better clutch.
Not exactley true..... My STi, Evo, S2000 never sounded like this, although my 02 WRX when we put straight cut gears and upgraded clutch did sound like the cobalt. But from the factory i've never heard anything like my TC.....

I would bet you're more than likely hearing noise from the release mechanism that presses on the throw-out bearing to disengage the clutch. I've noticed it and can occasionally hear it on mine (especially in around town slower driving) but it's completely normal on some cars and depends on the design of the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder and how it transfers force to the release mechanism to engage/disengage the clutch.
I need to dig up a copy of the factory service manuals for the new SS. GM in the past has used an accumulator on the hydraulic line of the older Getrag 284 5-speeds to smooth out the clutch engagement and with the no-lift and launch control features it wouldn't surprise me if they're using something similar built into the master/slave cylinder mechanism to minimize harsh impacts of clutch dumps. Shock kills driveline and transaxle components. Unfortunately if there was an accumulator, while it may keep stuff alive and prevent catastrophic failures, it can also cause the synchronizers to wear faster if not properly designed. That's the problem they had on the 284's.

BOV....for sure.
yes, indeed, now, if you completely understand the line between a wastegate and a blowoff valve, you would know that noise while shifting... yes, all the way into 3rd gear .... it is the blowoff valve releasing the excess, usually due to "hard acceleration" .. lol. yeah i know man, didn't mean to sound smart, but that's what it is, and i think it sounds great for stock. a little bit of a chirp when you feel like slammin the stocker to the floor! BOV. for sure dude.
yep.. BOV. for sure man. it's just cuz of the excess boost shooting everywhere when given the gears a quick run through. nothin to worry about, and it sounds pretty cool.

I don't notive any excessive noise on my tc, the sc clutch is mutch "stiffer" than the tc clutch tho. Not sure what everyone means about the clutch... Mines fine...
-just got back from the Mazda dealership with my GF, she just bought a Speed3 - fun car too. She drove my sc and tc and wanted to trade her CRV in for some more power... :]

Remember people.....the ss/tc has a lighter flywheel and that could cause this noise also. These are not casual clutches that are put in Honda Accords any other family car......this is a performance car with better clutches that can take a pounding. Disregard the noise....by the way, mine does it too and I just turn the radio up so I cant hear it.....lol
Must be the F-35 Swedish Hamster Power.
Mine does this also but it is usually when I am being gentle shifting into the gears. It just doesn't want to be driven like a grocery getter. It begs to shift through the gears like a banshee . So I do most of the time with the radio up and I don't hear a thing.
LOL

welcome to a cobalt.. the ss/sc has so many little problems and noises that usually are not very serious just really ******* irritatiing. doesnt surprise me the ss/tc's are making noises already
