Jacks/Jack Stands
Jacks/Jack Stands
Hey guys,
Looking to buy a jack and some jack stands... Whats the best stuff out there i should look for? I would like to have a set around for simple stuff to change tires etc.. What do you guys use? What do i need to get the simple jobs like that done? Also i guess it never hurts to have some around. Also, 2 or 4 jack stands etc?
Thanks a lot guys!

one of the two jacks you see above will work well with a lowered car. they're just more expensive. When that big red jack came out, it was $180 at Pepboys. looks like you can get it cheaper now. plus if the jack still isnt low enough to fit under the car, keep a 2x4 board on ya and just roll the car ontop of the board to help get you the extra lift.
This was a while back, though - I don't see it now. Lifts the rear of the car like it is not there
I use this for the Cruiser , too, so it's all good. The only bitch I have about this one is that it is stubborn to release sometimes, so getting a smooth let down can be problematic.
Those aluminum ones look nice - this big boy weighs 80 lbs, and the worst part of almost any job is getting this thing out of the garage & to the car !
Oh, well.

I just have the Michelin 2-ton floor (trolley) jack and 2 of their 2 ton jack stands. It has enough travel to get the Cobalt up off the wheels even when jacking from the engine cradle, but imo if you have some extra money to spend go with a full sized jack like what CudaJoe posted. It'll make some tasks a little easier depending on how often you have your car up off the ground. Mine's primarily for swapping tires, checking/changing brakes and get the tires ~1 inch off the ground, I don't need any more clearance than that so until I start working on more vehicles (or more tasks which is likely at this rate) I didn't see the need at the time

I got one of those sears 3 1/4 ton jacks, came with 2 jackstands and a crawler. Its pretty much over kill to lift the cobalt. But i like to know that when I get rid of the balt for a full size truck. It will handle lifting it without a problem.
I've been using a Mastercraft jack from Canadian Tire which I paid $45 for and it works well for the last 6 years. It lost some hydraulic fluid so I topped it off with brake fluid lol.
I think it's time to invest in a quality low profile aluminum jack soon though.

no it does not. Its best ability is used for rotating tires and getting just enough clearance to swap the fog lights from underneathe. definately not the best jack, but it was fantastic with my old lowered car.
I have a 2 ton jack from Autozone that was like $20 on sale since my old 3 ton jack just **** the bed. It'll jack from the front of the engine cradle just fine, you have to do the first few pumps by hand though because it is right under the air dam. If you have the money get an aluminum racing jack, I loved my old one I just didn't feel like forking over $200 at the moment.
