K&n sri

Going to get retuned by BYT on SAT. Wanted to get an intake before the tune but not sure which to get. Most people say K&N SRI but I was looking at the treadstone. I like the idea of the honeycomb. I was toying with the idea of buying the honeycomb and putting it in the K&N for the best of both. I currently have just a drop in K&N and airbox mod. I want to do this to give me some room up front. I have the Powell PCV system and will be adding some stuff so this option would be best for me. I could care less about the sound of either. I have to make a jump on this to get it by saturday. Any opinions which option would work best? Thanks

You want colder air. K&N sucks in hot air from the engine bay.

The whole idea of a cold air intake is to get cold air. Get the treadstone intake, it's cheaper and has more airflow plus gets cooler air.

Got the cold air concept. Only issue is maintenance on the filter. I use my car as a DD in mostly all weather. I absolutely despise taking my headlight out to get to it to clean it. I know it can be done from bottom but thats a bitch too. I havent heard of anyone losing performance with the K&N just complaints about Fuel trims being out of whack. Which is why I want the honeycomb. Most production cars i ever saw had some sort of air flow straightener by the MAF. Seems like it should help with the Fuel trims.

Get the K&N intake. when the cars moving, your not going to sucking in any hot air not to mention it has a heat shield... and cold air intakes only suck in ambient air, really should be called ambient air intake but the word "cold" sells.

I already ordered the K&N from Amazon. Got robbed a bit but it will be here for Friday. Also have the little honeycomb coming as well on friday. I always had good result with K&N just didnt know which worked better for this motor. Like I said though, it took hair off my head getting my headlight-bumper gap EXACTELY how I want it and the thought of taking that apart every 3 months or so would make me sick. Thanks for the help

LOL. Does anyone know the inside diameter of the K&N pipe where the filter mounts. I ordered a 3" honeycomb and hope it fits.

Nevermind I ordered a 3" and 3.5". Ill return the one that doesnt fit.

The treadstone one is easy maintenance. just pull off your fender well, take the filter off, clean it or put a new one on and done.

Just take off your fender well he says... Hey tell me whats easier to maintain, unscrewing 4-5 little screws including the ones underneathe near the intercooler to hot side pipe coupler (yes, you have to get under your car) or just popping up the hood?

Like I said before, theres 0 gains with a cold air intake over an SRI on a turbo charged and intercooled car.


Logically man lets look at this together.

SRI - sitting at a stop light, engines not underload, no threat of detonation from hot air, intake air temps get to 130*F on a 88*F day.
CAI - sitting at a stop light, engines not underload, no threat of detonation from hot air, intake air temps get to 100*F on a 88*F day

SRI - cruising, engines not underload, intake air temps 88*F on a 88*F day
CAI - cruising, engines not underload, intake air temps 88*F on a 88*F day

SRI - 100% throttle racking through all the gears, intake air temps 88*F on a 88*F day.
CAI - 100% throttle racking through all the gears, intake air temps 88*F on a 88*F day.

Whatever "cooling" benefit a CAI gives you is negated by the fact that its being compressed in the turbo charger... compression = heat, intercooler reduces the heat back to ambient.


Now lets look at the real pro's and con's of both.

K&N SRI pro's - proven effective, easy to access, does not require tune to function (a.k.a. does not trip CELs).

K&N con's - everyone has it so its not original?

CAI pro's - makes same power as K&N intake, not everyone has one so your engine bay will look different.

CAI con's - not easily accessed, needs tune no matter what (it WILL trip CELs).


These are facts.

Yes sir. Why the lol? He tuned my car originally. I had to buy the ZZP PCM so I could get back to him and get updated. Its a night and day difference. My car is running like a clock again. Everything is working great. No knock, -1 LTFT, 24 psi and smooth. We did 2 different dyno pulls. 1 with zzp PCXM and one with his. It was 298HP and 340TQ with ZZP and 315HP and 360TQ with his. Much smoother curve too.

Dont listen to anything that this guy says. He spews his crap all over this forum and i think 9 out of 10 times its something that is not correct. Like this bs statement.

The k&n is hands down the best intake you can buy for this car. Its been proven by numerous companies and ive had the least amount of issues with it skewing trims. Also the air box seats up against the hood and seals. So there for there really ahouldnt be much warm air getting in. This isnt a neon where the filter sits next to the engine


But hey lets mention since he likes cold air intakes the fact that when you get water behind the bumper since usually they are sitting directly behind the fog light hole. Iit will find its way into the air system. Also not to mention a cold air intake wont be sucking a whole lot of cold air since it doesnt have airflow directed right at it.

i thought he was done after there were complaints about him. I know he does great tunes but his customer service was being questioned.

^^^^ THIS.

K&N barely throws trims off and will not trigger a CEL. alot of people use it and like it. anything that sits near the ground, will take in water and hydrolock your engine. besides you get an intake for the sound. there is no appreciable difference in power despite all the BS claims these manufacturers make about adding HP.

I didnt know the whole history of what happened with him. I only knew he was close and he has some good reviews back in the day. When we met he explained to me he has some hard times with family loss and it jammed him up a bit. He is a really nice guy to work with. Very knowledgeable. Sometime **** happens that takes precedence in life. I can understand that. Im happy with what he did for me. I have a good deal of trust in what he does and its hard to trust anyone anymore. To quote your other post about the K&N, i made a post about the ZZP Pcm throwing my fuel trims off. Funny thing was I put the K&N on the night before I went for the retune with BYT, It actually corrected my fuel trims and brought them down. Now after the retune im sitting pretty with my LTFT hitting -1 to -.07. Thats good enough for me.

Yeah, Nick had a loss in the family but the issues were before that. Im not going to reveal the contents of his purse but lets just say he and like 80 other people got there picture taken professionally. The complaints on this site were about him basically dropping his satelite tuning program without finishing peoples tunes or giving back their money and there were a few people local that he dropped - mainly people asking for turbo swaps and he didnt have the time to do them (I remember one being like that).

tldr: got picture taken, did not smile
took money, provided 0 to 50% of promised service.

I met Nick and was tuned by him prior to the melt down and had zero issues with him as well. his tuning is on point. If I need a retune I would go back to him. Despite the history, he is good at what he does and I as well as everyone else on here thought he was done touching cobalts. Good to know he's tuning still.
