Limp Mode Check Engine Light

I was driving home from class tonight on the freeway and zoned out so much that at 85 mph i shifted from 4th to 3rd instead of 5th gear and my car red lined and went into limp mode.

I threw on the flashers and pulled over, turned off my car, turned it back on and it started running again. The only problem is now the check engine light is staying on.

I'm hoping it's just because the car may have overheated or freaked out and needs some time to chill out but I'm wondering what else it could be and what I should do?

I shifted into third and pressed the gas to speed up .

As if I was downshifting into 3rd and not knowing it so i pretty much pushed it to the rev limiter.

You also get misfires quite often if you get on it if the engine is still <170 degrees... Just an FYI.
