no worries, had I not ordered a spare for when I clean my valves (checked with a bore scope and my IM is dirty pretty sure I have a failed PCV valve) I probably would of though similar. Just a side note for those cleaning valves, check your IM, the one I bough used had some oil build up/coking on it not significant but there was still some build up.

My car is currently burning oil, blue smoke. I had a catchcan installed prior and relized how useless it was when my charge pipes still had oil in them. I did a compression test and it came up good. So I thought my turbo seals were shot. Do you guys recommend me trying the powell separator first to see if the problem persists? Who knows my seals my be good and I might just be getting a **** load of blow-by!

If you are seeing a lot of blue smoke then its likely the seals.

If you had a lot of blue smoke and it was from blow by, your engine would be hurting bad

it's gotten worse now that it is hot out. The plugs need to get replaced it again, however I seafoam it every oil change and it doesn't smoke much at all... Should I try this first as an alternative and if it persists go on with replacing the turbo?

Clean your charge pipes and intercooler if the smoke is reduced after that then Powell's solution will help. If no change then you have other issues to address first.

I'm going to clean the charge pipe, silicone hoses, and install the pcv system. Then if the problem reoccurs it's turbo swap time!

Giving some thought to one of these for preventative maintenance reasons. One thing I'm curious about though:

The oil that this system catches -- where does it go? Does it flow into a catch can that needs to be emptied periodically, or does it have a way of flowing back into the engine, and if the latter, through what orifice?

Look at the pic on firet page. Comes with a new dipstick tube and Jose hose connected to that and the separator so oil goes back into the oil pan. U don't need to do anything anything, it does it all for you. V3 is way to go, it addresses the pcv valve port as well

Is there a link anywhere to the difference of the V3 vs prior designs? I got mine in 2013 I beleive, so I'm sure it must make it a V1 or V2

Well v3 has a 3rd line to the intake manifold, if u don't have that it's v2. U can upgrade to v3 for cheaper than buying new, just email Powell

The oil goes back in through the dipstick tube? Does this mean I lose my dipstick?

Yes, John includes a new dipstick with an adapter tube welded to it in the kit.

Does anyone have a pic of the V3, or of the modification to intake manifold? I'm going to be upgrading mine, just wanted to see how the setup is

No lol you get a new modified dipstick tube with an adaptor like 63 nova said, the drain hose screws into the adaptor via an4 fitting . look at pic on first post and u will see

Yeah. I didn't see any indication of where the dipstick would go so I figured I'd play the part of the idiot and ask a stupid question.

And now for my next stupid question, would my car with this installed have any chance of passing California smog visual inspection?

The engine oil system is still a sealed unit. I wouldn't think it would change anything with smog emissions.

It won't make any difference to smog tests. Actually maybe it will, no oil in intake makes for less harmful emissions so it will help you out actually

This^. You'd have an issue with a breather filter, but the PVC is still sealed with Powell's system. Since nothing vents to atmosphere you're fine.

Right, I'm sure in terms of emissions it's just fine.

But in Cali, if I understand correctly, pretty much anything that modifies anything that in any way pertains to emissions and doesn't have a CARB approval sticker will flunk visual (the pop-the-hood-and-look-for-mods test), even if all the smog scanners say everything's perfect.

Kinda hoping there's some Cali people on this thread who could say "No, your understanding is incorrect because [insert long winded explanation here]."

I really doubt a visual inspector will notice. But I'd wait for a Cali user to comment. You could always just disconnect the system for the visual inspection (is it an annual inspection or less frequent?)
