My 2010 Cobalt SS/TC
My 2010 Cobalt SS/TC
purchased 29APR10
the day i bought it....

today...

so far ive just done non performance stuff... 5% Tint, De-badge, removed pinstripe, and rear side reflectors - black.
beyond that, i have a long never ending list of stuff... so far i guess i need a bit of guidance toward what to do first. but heres what ive got for first 5 engine based things...
1- GM Stage 1 Kit or Cold Air/Short Ram Intake
3- Exhaust
4- HKS or Greddy blow off valve (yes i know it doesn't add HP)
5- Meth Injection?
questions i have on each of the engine questions...
1- is the GM Stage 1 kit really worth it? and does it really boost your HP to 290 and torque to 325? and would it be wise to do intake before that or after? and which is better for living in a random climate city... would it be wise to get short ram and just get a hoodscoop that supports a short ram with cold air?
3-Exhaust, would it be better to do 3" turbo back, or 3" cat-back, and what do i need to be careful with when it comes to voiding my 02 sensor warranty.
4- HKS or Greddy blow off valves, which is better, or is it more preference? and will it void my turbo warranty? if so, i recently heard that if you reroute the blow off air, back to the engine it wont throw off your air/fuel ratio, or something like that, anyone have any experience in that area?
5- meth injection... is it good for the engine or just for HP, if it adds HP, how much does it add? is it good for the engine? is it hard to find the meth/water mix? how much does it cost, and how much does it use? would it be better just to get a larger intercooler?
and heres what ive got for cosmetic physical/physics stuff...
1- paint my front bowtie remove cobalt emblem, move rear SS emblem to where rear bowtie used to be, and move the turbocharged logo directly under that.
2- paint rims black
3- remove spoiler and replace w/ downforce
4- above rear window vortex generator
5- eyelids
6- front downforce canards
7- paint/remove grille
8- halo's or projectors
9- the list goes on...
questions about some of these...
2- painting my rims black... i have seen quite a few great jobs done by spray paint, so i purchased some wheel paint and clear coat, anyone have any do's or dont's when it comes to painting rims? any tips?
3- spoiler, im leaving the spoiler on until i do my rims and bowtie, and grille. anyone know of any good downforce spoilers that are small and look good? ive seen some sick SRT-4 ones
4- anyone hear of any vortex generators that are specifically for cobalt SS's or is there any that are interchangable?
5- anyone have any unique eyelids? (not the ones bought online) i helped paint my buddies SRT-4 eyelids and they look amazing, so i want the same custom look, rather than generic look.
6- front down force canards? any specific SS ones? or are they pretty interchangable?
7- remove or paint the grille black?
8- halo's or projectors? i like the look of halo's alot with the black background but are they worth it? and projectors, whats the deal with them, i know alot of people who really like them...
all input is appreciated... im new to the forums, and would like any support and information i can get from anyone...

for the turbo charged models there isnt a current hood to support a short ram to be functional. honest difference between a short ram and cold air is very minimal.
3-Exhaust, would it be better to do 3" turbo back, or 3" cat-back, and what do i need to be careful with when it comes to voiding my 02 sensor warranty.
dealer basically says anything after the cat is yours to play with pretty much. in all honesty though if you break something they need to prove your aftermarket parts caused the break. read up on the magnuson moss act
4- HKS or Greddy blow off valves, which is better, or is it more preference? and will it void my turbo warranty? if so, i recently heard that if you reroute the blow off air, back to the engine it wont throw off your air/fuel ratio, or something like that, anyone have any experience in that area?
theres a few different things you can do. get the synapse or hks and recirculate it back into the intake and block off the bpv and have no issues OR VTA and get a maf relocation from zzp, dejon, performance autowerks, or clear image automotive and get tuned for it.
5- meth injection... is it good for the engine or just for HP, if it adds HP, how much does it add? is it good for the engine? is it hard to find the meth/water mix? how much does it cost, and how much does it use? would it be better just to get a larger intercooler?
meth is mostly for cooling and timing bumps. i wouldnt look for crazy hp gains off this.also remember that having a really large intercooler on the stock turbo isnt beneficial. thers companies like performance autowerks, zzp, hahn, dejon and some others that make a street intercooler which will give full benefits from the stock turbo

save your money and powdercoat them. you will thank me in the long run. idc how good the paint job comes out....it will never withstand what powdercoat will.
3- spoiler, im leaving the spoiler on until i do my rims and bowtie, and grille. anyone know of any good downforce spoilers that are small and look good? ive seen some sick SRT-4 ones
in all honesty look at apr or some univeral ones. or if you really wanna fork out cash contact crawford composits and get the one made for the cobalt. its full carbon fiber and not cheap what so ever.
4- anyone hear of any vortex generators that are specifically for cobalt SS's or is there any that are interchangable?
you dont need it....... the only vortex generators they make for our cars are the univeral ones which are all seperate.
5- anyone have any unique eyelids? (not the ones bought online) i helped paint my buddies SRT-4 eyelids and they look amazing, so i want the same custom look, rather than generic look.
gestapoo has the best eyelids on here that ive seen. all the rest look stupid.
6- front down force canards? any specific SS ones? or are they pretty interchangable?
again you dont need it. your throwing away money. no one makes them for this car that i know of either. you should consider your goals the the car and build the cars around what you plan to do with it.
7- remove or paint the grille black?
theres a series of clips in the back and it just comes right out.
8- halo's or projectors? i like the look of halo's alot with the black background but are they worth it? and projectors, whats the deal with them, i know alot of people who really like them...
usually halo lights are projectors with halo rings around them.....do you mean hids or bi-xenon lights?

^^Please do not refer people to the MMWA. You clearly have never read it in full if you are referring to it for someone putting a performance enhancing exhaust on their car. There is so much misinformation about the MMWA all over the internet (mainly on enthusiast car forums) it is ridiculous. I can assure you if you took your car in with Aftermarket bolt-ons strapped to your car and mentioned the MMWA they would laugh in your face.
no ive read through it. no need to get on my case about it. my cars been into the dealer numerous times with a full exhaust and ive never been told anything about it. bottom line is if your rear brakes fail that cant say your downpipe caused it, they cant say your intercooler or charge piping caused it. they have to prove what that your aftermarket part caused the break in parts. now if you put full bolt ons and fry your piston rings do you think they are going to take care of your warrenty? no.
like any dealer will tell you messing with the downpipe/cats is not warrenty approved but the "catback" part of the exhaust is usually something no one will mess with.
another example.....buddies motor became porus and he needed a new engine. took the car in with a catback only and they ended up putting a brand new engine in. theres a bulletin discussing that pretty much altering the cars performance via intercooler piping, intercooler, downpipe, turbo, ecu etc etc cauing the car to make more boost/power/torque then the factory settings will void the warrenty. also for gms1 guys......same thing applies. the gms1 is covered under warrenty unless you add aftermarket parts on top of gms1

welcome!
as far as exhaust turbo back will be the best, but if you cant get it all at once get the down pipe, most power gain.
also get the GM stage kit, the air intakes will only work good if the car is tuned for the air intake.
i dont think it will look good with moving the SS and turbo symbol where u want them. but to each there own.
have fun with her!!

First- Welcome
Second- Dont move the badges
Third- Do a Catless DP, CP, I, then get it tuned and have fun with the car
Fourth- Paint the rims black, they always look nice on a black car
Good luck man

ugh, i hate that every dealership has to put their grubby little hands in marketing on our cars.. and their placement is dreadful. i completely debadged but yours is nice too.. just getting rid of the dealership and bowtie seriously cleaned it up
if your gonna do bolt ons of any sort you need a tune. the car wont add a 1 pound of torque or 1 hp without a tune its runs around air loads and if you give it more air it will give you less boost to compensate. weather you go with an aftermarket tune (you will get significantly mor hp and way more driveable with bolt ons) or the GMS1 (i have it love it) ive heard it responds ok to bolt ons but still has perameters it has to adhere to by factory programming and wont get you the results you want.
STAY AWAY FROM Cold air or short ram intakes And BOVs unless you get a custom tune. the car has been known to make less powrer and have driveability issues without a tune for these. really bad driveability issues.
best bang for your buck is a custom tune and a down pipe and charge pipe.... Have fun.

1. Dealers are the devil. When I bought my yellow Z they put a solid 2"x6" plaque on the back with thier info... I ripped it off before I even signed the papers and told them to clean it up.
2. I have a Dejon SRI (yes for the SS/TC)if you would like it, $60 shipped. Filter needs to be cleaned.

i like them. i think i would like them better if you just carried the top part through to the side and not done the side at all. just think it looks odd with the way that the bumper starts to flatten out on the side of the headlight to the bottom part. IMO
2 years later!
thanks man!

Bov is waste of money on this car, u get one and u will have to relocate maf and tune which will void ur warrenty, get an intake and the bpv is just as loud if that's what u want. Gms1 does give u around that much hp, meth will void ur warrenty. If u don't care about warrenty, don't get gms1 get trifecta or hptune, alot cheaper and u get alot more hp
