Normal engine sound? Video included

Hi All,

I'm looking to purchase an 08 SS with 151k miles as a daily driver...I snapped this video of the motor running. Does it sound normal? The previous owner passed away so I do not know the history of the car. It seems very well maintained.

Is there anything I need to look for in the 08's?

I figured I can rebuild the motor if its bad. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Nope sounds normal. Looks like it was well maintained since the engine bay is that clean.

Wow...that engine bay is clean as **** for 151k!!! Mine has 44k and is way dirtier. So id say he kept pretty good care of it.

That being said. The engine sounds normal. But 151k on a 4cyl GM engine is alot. Id pull the plugs and check them out. Also, see if you can get a compression test or leakdown test done to see how the internals are. Both are farely easy to do.

If you dont mind me asking, how much are they asking for the car?

I'm surprised the engine bay looks that good. I couldn't imagine putting 40,000 miles on a car in a year.

sounds good. sounds like it has the original cover over the HPFP.

mine in a 2008, i changed the cover for 15 bucks (gm offers a revised one) and it made less noise.

Sounds normal to me too.
If it's not modded, not even GMS1 then I think chances are very good that they took very good care of it and were nice to it. Not to say that people who mod their cars are not the same but it just shows a lack of interest in going faster.

I noticed the spare on the rear passenger side. What's with that? Do you know? Tires and wheels are not cheap on this thing, even OEM.

so if it is stock and has 151k miles, then i hope you are not paying more than like 7-8k for it..a stock one with 40-60k miles only goes for about 12-14k....gl

Well, there's proof that the valve gunk doesn't affect every DI motor.....................maybe.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate that!

The rear passenger wheel is missing and cannot be found anywhere. I figure a single wheel for about $300 on eBay. The car does need new tires. I'm not very familiar with the cobalt, I'm trying to research as much as I can.

Does anyone have any tips or what to look for?
How's the transmission on this car? Are the brakes expensive to replace?

Thanks again. This is a great friendly forum!

Also, I would be getting an amazing deal. I don't want to get too excited yet. I will post once the sale is hopefully final.

I assume you're getting this for about 6-7K.

With that many miles, you would be well off to follow the above advice and have a compression/leakdown test performed by a qualified mechanic. If this is an auction car, though, you don't have that choice.

Beyond that, all of the problems we could tell you about would have already shown up at that mileage. If original, the turbo and clutch can't have much longer to go. The rear brake issue we have would have already been repaired. The power steering and key lock issue would have already been resolved if it was going to show up at all. The cracked-block issue would have surfaced at 40K miles. The compression/leakdown would tell you if you have gunky valves.

This forum isn't that friendly, btw.

Transmissions are fine as long as you are stock power (which it is). They tend to start popping when you get past 350trq but 400trq is what most ppl would say.

Brakes probably aren't any more expensive to replace labor wise. Pads might be a little more pricey. Im not sure since I havent bought pads before.

Check to see if it has had all the Recall work taken care of. Like i said before. Wouldnt hurt to do a compression check to see how the rings/cylinders are doing.

And with 150k miles, im guessing that the valves are probably gunky as ****. May want to have your head cleaned.

Edit...^ that guy beat me to it lol
