Oil filter question

Oil filter question

Ok so im a ******* and when I was at my buddy danas house changing my oil we were in a rush and completely forgot to change the filter.... yes i know...... anyways. My ? is can I change the filter without draining the oil or? Thanks guys.

Edit: Sorry this is also in the wrong section..... jesus haha.

I would say you should be able too....BUT I would change the oil again because now you have put your clean oil through a dirty filter and your oil will have that in it now. I am not sure how much it will hurt the oil....I am not a professional mechanic. But in my mind I would change the oil again if you change the filter.

Actually it wont...I once cracked the cover on my old base balt and replaced it without changing the oil....your fine...trust me

The oil is in the pan, which is typically lower than the oil filter location. You will lose some oil, but not all. I would just check the level and add the necessary amount.

I actually change my filter in between oil changes as well as during an oil change. If you unscrew it and let it drain a little you won't loose much oil at all.

You only loose what doesn't drip back off into the caniseter when you pull it out. Completely safe and easy to do, I've also changed filters by themselves without changing the oil.

As others said, you'll be fine.

Fun fact: My motorcycle service manual suggests replacing my oil filter EVERY OTHER oil change.
