#09-06-01-014: Oil Leak by High Pressure Fuel Pump (Reseal Camshaft Cap) - (Dec 3, 2009)

Subject: Oil Leak by High Pressure Fuel Pump (Reseal Camshaft Cap)

Models: 2007-2009 Chevrolet Cobalt SS, HHR SS

2007-2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP

2007-2009 Saturn SKY Redline

2008-2009 Opel GT

2008 Daewoo G2X

Equipped with a RPO LNF Engine

Please Refer to GMVIS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Condition
Some customers may comment on an oil leak.

Upon further investigation, a technician may find oil leaking from the high pressure fuel pump area.

Cause
This condition may be caused by a camshaft cap that is not sealed correctly to the cylinder head, causing oil to leak out.

Correction
•Verify the customer's concern.
•Remove the fuel pump. Refer to Fuel Pump Removal in SI.
•Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Removal in SI.

•Remove the camshaft cap (1). Remove all excess sealing material from both surfaces.

Note: It is critical during installation to ensure the bearing rear cap and cylinder head alignment is correct and the mating surfaces are flush.

• Ensure that all sealing material has been removed from the components and the sealing surfaces are clean and free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.

• Install and align the rear cap within 20 minutes of applying the sealer.

•Apply a 2.5 mm (0.1 in) bead of sealer, GM P/N 12378521 (in Canada, use P/N 88901148) to the cylinder head at the number 6 intake camshaft rear cap mating surface.
Note: Apply the sealer to all locations centrally locating the bead on the rail.

• Run the bead to 5 mm (0.2 in), dimension "a", as shown.

• Where the cap ends on the perimeter rail, extend bead approximately 4 mm (0.2 in) beyond edge of cap.

• Run bead, dimension "c", 32 mm (1.3 in) from the edge of the cylinder head as shown.

• Run bead, dimension "b", 20 mm (0.8 in) from edge of cylinder head as shown.

•Install the number 6 intake camshaft rear cap.
6.1. Tighten the cap bolts evenly to 5 N·m(44 lb in).

6.2. Tighten the cap bolts evenly to 10 N·m(89 lb in).

6.3. Back the cap bolts out 120 degrees.

6.4. Tighten the cap bolts evenly a final pass to 10 N·m(89 lb in).

•Install the camshaft cover and gasket, GM P/N 12609291. Refer to Camshaft Cover Installation in SI.
•Install the fuel pump. Refer to Fuel Pump Installation in SI.
Important: When installing the fuel pump, install a NEW high pressure fuel pump O-ring (GM P/N 12600313), high pressure fuel pump gasket-to-cylinder head (GM P/N12595951) and high pressure fuel pipe (GM P/N12615401).

I wrote a how-to awhile back for fixing the THREE places my car was leaking oil from in that region. None of them required pulling the valve cover and a cam shaft bearing cap though. Just wondering if this is yet another leak that hasnt started on my car.

They arent pics, they are TIFF files, i cant save them from work for some reason, but they want you to remove the camshaft bearing cap from the end of the intake cam. This cap is the top half of the boss that the Hipressure pump mounts to

Yes because the upgrades are not what caused the issue, it is a design flaw from the factory. so they can't deny it.

So this would make a 4th place on top of the 3 Gimpster discovered? I think I'm just going to tear my motor apart and rebuild it . The end-plate leak was resolved, my camshaft sensor is still leaking, I can't tell yet if this one is affecting me nor can I tell if the HPFP (from Gimpter's how-to) is an issue either.

Mine is leaking .....I checked it back in november when the Preliminary Info bulletin came out (I posted it a month ago ....but no one even commented on it lol.) . If you pull back the cover on the HPFP you should see oil on the bottom of the sound deadening foam.

My vehicle was leaking from the fuel pump (might be related to this TSB), the end plate AND the cam position sensor. Since I've taken those actions, the leaks have stopped thank god. Bad enough that it was moving a good bit of oil down the bell housing onto the front engine mount.

I'm guessing this is a more sexy fix to the fuel pump leak than mine, but I'll cross that bridge if it starts leaking again.

My valve cover tried to start leaking too, but re-torquing the bolts solved it.

Have you guys seen the TSB about the reluctor ring on the cam (I forget which cam) moving around? Hope that doesnt happen to me.

Just sent my car to the dealer for this, mine leaked a LOT tho on 1 trip just from work. The oil was barely on the dipstick when I checked it. I had just changed the oil less then 1K miles prior to that, so I know it was full!!

Yep, they all leak there. I have never seen an LNF cobalt that did not have oil in that area. Even brand new ones with 2K miles. Mine was coming from the high pressure fuel pump. The o-ring does not seal well. I first cleaned it all up and put black RTV on everything but it started leaking again. I then used the stock gasket as a templet to make a new rubber and cork gasket. No leaks anymore.

Mine's not there, it's around the camshaft sensor. The dealership already replaced and sealed my camshaft end-plate but I'm guessing the leak in this location could lead to leaks elsewhere if too much oil is getting past in the first place.

I really don't want my motor being torn apart that leaves too much room for error....

It is most likely at the high pressure fuel pump.

Ya it's tough to say exactly; it's not **** loads like it was before they sealed the end-plate, but we'll just say it's still rustproofed for the winter . I'm going to have to cave and get it looked at but I hate having this kind of service done.
