so with a GT28 or GT30 new pistons and rings would be needed in other words?

Thats a given, IMO. If you are planning on pushing over 400 whp, I would say it would be the best bet to swap them out. $500 before an engine blows is cheaper than a rebuild.

The sad thing is I normally run stock tune and when I do use the higher boost it's only 21-22psi normally, maxing occasionally at 23-24, so hearing this makes it even more surprising to me. I'm not even running one of the 25-30psi crazy-tunes...

I agree on the low-RPM boost. Even at low throttle but still under light boost the engine even sounds different below that RPM vs above that RPM.

I'm on the road right now, but would it be alright if I PM you some questions when I get back?

No problem y'all! I've been just as curious as I know many of you all were when the opportunity presented itself to check it out. This seemed like one of those times where my misfortune could possibly be turned around to help and inform many people... and feeding the curiosity of what the inside of the engine's like.

#3 gave out on me too. You can see some detonation scoring on the bearings:

And here's our motor from the bottom. I love seein the little oil squirters:

His guideline also assumes that there is nothing wrong like an intake tract leak. If you have a post MAF leak for example, you'll be taking in unmetered air, if it's on the low pressure side. A leak on the high pressure side would cause the turbo to work harder, producing higher EGTs.

A 5% error in fueling could easily be the cause of problems like this when you're under high loads.

Now an interesting question.....

Are they going to send your oil to have an oil analysis performed?

The old saying is: if you can't afford to pay, don't play ... too hard anyway think long and hard before tuning your cars, especially when you yourself have no control over the tune in many cases.

---

OP: Are they still fixing that under warranty? With the damage you've shown..... please don't take this wrong, but it seems like it would be pretty obvious at this point the motor was pushed hard. Broken ring lands, beat to **** bearings.... all classic tell-tale signs.

I think it was knocking HARD. Not sure who tuned you, but I would advise to get the tune completely revamped when you get the engine back.

Not sure if you meant me (the OP of this thread), but the pics/story on this page aren't mine.

Yes, mine was under warranty.

We should start an LNF pics thread.

So as I read this thread, I see 2 maybe 3 cars that have had issues with the rings? Almost everyone on this site has a tune and if you speak to people that tune for a living, they have sold hundreds of them. So we have at least a few hundred tuned vehicles, with who knows what kind of shitty maintenance done to them, driven who knows how hard, putting who knows how shitty gas in them.... Take all that into account and some people on here are trying to blame GM engineers and say these are shitty motors??? Man some of you need to just buy a civic and not put a single mod on it...

If it's properly tuned and there are no problems, you can beat on the car when it's up to temp. Shouldn't be a problem to wring it out hard.

I doubt anyone with a stock car has had any ringland failures. I mean bone stock. Not just an intake or cp or exhaust or "just a tune". I mean STOCK.

Actually there was 1 if you do your searching on the forums. Bone stock. There is also a 2010 Camaro at my local dealer getting a new engine because of a piston related issue, it has less then 1k miles, no modifications whatsoever......It happens
