ported intake manifold

just wondering if anyones tried to port their intake mani or get a bigger throttle body on an LNF. the intake mani just doesnt look like it flows a lot... then again my last car had a k20 in it but anyways, does anyone thing there would be benefits to a ported intake mani and bigger TB?

I thought someone (zzp?) tried it, there was a thread on it. The IM on the ms3 is kind of the same way, ported though, gained 20whp or something nice on my friends who had his custom done and dyno'd. I think there is potential though.

I think zzp put on the LE5 throttle body with little or no gains or something like that. I wonder if it would work on a big turbo car though

I did it, ported the mani, bead blasted the runners when I finished, didn't get EVERYTHING, but I did match the runners from head to mani right to the gasket so there is no flow interruption, after reviewing DI head porting, I left the head alone, it clearly is not a bottleneck in power. Don't ask me what difference it made, I did it just to fool around, but I might have gotten 5-7 hp out of it...maybe.

I think for the MS3 IM they had to cut the IM in half port it and weld it back together...I'd have to go check again, its been 2 years since I was in that scene.

sounds interesting. if id does pick up 5-7whp thatd be worth it. a dyno would be nice tho. im suprized nobody has really tested it much. i have heard of zzp putting a diffrent throttle body but not porting the intake mani.

I think an extrude honed intake manifold, via AFM, could be a major benefit to the LNF. Instead of hogging out the intake and reducing velocity, you could improve upon it.

I could be wrong but logically, it makes sense.

Funny this came up... I was switching out the injectors on my car tonight. While I had the Intake Manifold off it was a good time to see if it could be improved upon. So first thing was to see how the gasket matched up to it and the head:

(My cell pics suck, it's hard to see the material left since it's already marked with Black Sharpie here)

You can see there's metal left on the bottom of both the IM and the Head but a thin piece around the sides and top. So I left the bottom area alone other then smoothing it out.

This was after the rough sanding. Note - Harbor Freight Sanding Drums suck...notice the squirley mark that took an hr to sand out after, thats where the 2nd shank I had for the drums snapped..

I never took a finished pic of the Manifold, I moved onto the Throttle Body when we started to notice how funky that was lol.. I ended up cleaning up the runners but left the plenum portion totally alone. I felt I would do more damage then good trying to force some tools into there, I just don't have the right stuff for THAT job.

Unfortunately I didn't take any before pics of the Throttle Body On the back side of it, it's pretty smooth but has a kick out piece that makes a pretty nasty edge. I can only assume this is to help direct the air at the runners on the manifold. It seemed a bit extreme to me so I just smoothed it out a bit.

But here are some pics of what I did with it:

The front had some really wacky dips and ledges, I did a pretty good job of leaving some of the shape but smoothing it all out nicely.

This bottom lip has a pretty severe angle with a bump as well into the plate, I smoothed the bump piece out and then "knife edged" the bottom lip a bit.

It only took a buddy and I about 30 mins to get the Manifold off. Its actually pretty easy to do. Some of what you are reading is very hard to understand without seeing this in person. Once you look at this Throttle Body you will get it lol.

The good stuff:

Car started and idled like normal, in fact it was a bit smoother even! I took it out for a cruise and immediately you could feel the response was better, you could feel it was breathing easier. So I headed to the highway to do a couple pulls, it was about 32* while I was out. I did a 60 pull in 3rd and it ripped the tires quite a bit more then normal and felt stronger everywhere after. I then did a few more pulls and it ripped the tires apart worse every pull, really feels more powerful everywhere now and the pull is strong and steady! I didn't have the logger with me but I will be going out hopefully before this storm in the morning to see if it improved. Ive been pulling 4.7-4.8 60-100 times consistently lately before the Ported IM/TB.

I spent a little time gasket matching the lnf manifold I had and smoothed the TB, but there's not a lot to do with the manifold. The TB is very rough though.

I could do it, probably a 2 day turn around time, I'll see if I can bead blast it too if I can find more media in time.

I have to say I felt the same way, I didn't mess with the TB at all, and I trust BYT's thoughts on it, so I'll take it back off and approach it the same way. There is a DEFINITE benefit to smoothing out the approach to the head. Your not hogging out the intake by no means, it's not necessary anyways, what your doing is gasket matching for the most part.

Exactly right, its hard to tell from my pics but you can see it wasn't grossly enlarged or hogged out. I just made sure there was nothing to slow the air down!

And don't just put the gasket on the manifold, mark the holes and grind!! The bottom has extra material and the head matches that. If you grind out the manifold there it will direct air right into a wall at the head.

The TB def took a lil studying and then finally bit the bullet on it. If you follow the shapes around the plate area and continue them out of the opening you will see what I did. Again, this is pretty hard to explain or understand without actually seeing it.

Edit: And its already snowing. No logging

Very nice man!! I would just take that bottom edge where there's the bump then it angles to the opening and "knife edge" that edge. The polishing looks pretty damn good tho, vary noice!

Are you going to do the IM as well Tyler?

yeah, I've got some more P&P to do on it, i'm iffy on the knife edge butterfly. I've hear stories of this making for ruff idle. Did you knfie edge the butterfly?

on the intake mani, yeah im trying to find a used one, just like i did with the throttle body.

p.s. WTF was with the ruff cast on the inner lip all the way around the throttle body?????

No, not the butterfly. I didn't touch that or anything where that seats at or around idle.

Im talking at the opening, around one half the shape inside is angling out of that opening. On that side, keep tapering it steeper until that outside edge is a bit thinner. I didn't go TOO crazy there, Ive seen some people make it a razor edge before lol. But that will help direct the air from the CP into the TB more smoothly as well.

sweet. i just landed an intake mani as well. im hoping a ported t/b and intake mani will make some decent power. id be happy with just 10whp overall to be honest. letting the car breathe better is also very helpful.
