Question for Swapping PCMs with HPT
I did search and didn't find what i need
My car is a 2010 LNF
I just purchased a 2nd PCM from a 09 Cobalt LNF
I have pulled my stock 2010 File from my Car with HPT but havent Licenced my Car yet
I am going to pull my PCM and keep it stock and tune the 2nd PCM
Do i go ahead and Licence my car now with the stock PCM in it? Or do i wait until i get the new PCM and Licence that one?
Im going to have to load my stock file on the new PCM once i get it? Do i install the new one then load my stock file on it? How do i change the VIN?
Can anyone give me some insight on what i have to do here before i waste 2 credits for nothing
Thanks for the Help

This would be better asked over in HPT, but I'll try and do it from memory. If they were from the same model year, the model year license is the way to go. Since it's not, read your stock file first. (I see you did)
Put the new ECU in the car and try to write entire. I think you'll have to license it. 2 credits shot.
You will then have to do the 30 minute security relearn before it will start even if you change the VIN with HPT. This will have to be done on every ECU swap since it wasn't set up with a TechII, doesn't matter if you change the VIN or not. The ones I sold from mine VIN had to have this done before the buyers car would run.
Modify the tune as you see fit using write calibration only, not write entire. The write entire is only when an OS change is needed. You may have to license the ECU again, I'm not sure, if so another 2 credits shot.
I'll look up the SES relearn and post it in a minute.
There is a good 4 cyl section in HP Tuners several of us argue in.
Edit: Found it from an old email...
You disconnect the battery
Change the PCM
Reconnect the battery
get in the car turn the key on
let it sit for 10 minutes or until the security light on your dash goes off
then turn the car off
and turn it back on sit for another 10 minutes or until the light goes off
then turn it off again
and turn back on and sit for 10 more minutes or until the light goes off
and it should start right up after shutting it off one more time
but you have to make sure you DO NOT touch or use anything electrical in the car like the radio and stuff because its learning the PCM. you also cannot open any doors or anything
you must do this even to switch back to your stocker.
I'd roll the window down before I started rather than sit in the car 30 mins.

I can't say, perhaps someone else will know. I retuned a spare with HP Tuners that I had Trifecta tuned and had to relicense that one as I did a write entire over the Trifecta tune OS. That's when I went with the model year license for '08 Cobalts. If you are thinking about flashing the GMPP tune at some point, you will need 2 more credits for that as well.
If you want to put a 2010 tune on that PCM you need to either license both PCMs, or have a TECH 2 flash the tune for your vin onto the second pcm and then only register that one.
Either way you are paying money, but because of the year difference it might be worth your while to have the 2010 tune flashed on by a tech 2.

I believe we are going to try running a 2009 PCM on my 2010
Not alot of Stage 1 tunes for 2010s around yet
I don't wanna goto the dealer and ask for anything about this PCM wanna keep it quiet
PCM cost me $200 CAD

Ok, is the PCM already programmed for an 09?
Assuming you want to put the stage tune on you will have to license the PCM, and license the GM stage file you want to put on.
I know you want to keep it quiet, thatst why I said TECH2, I know a guy around here that will do the flashes for around $100, and its not a GM dealership, they just have a TECH2.

Where are located OntarioKey?
I was just wondering i noticed lastnight that the Ignition key only goes forward on a Cobalt
What position do i need to put the key in when doing the Security Relearn? 1 or 2nd position forward?

I am in Burlington, but my friend ha the contact somewhere in North York I think it is for the PCM reprogramming.
Does the pcm already have the OS installed?
I think its the run position for the relearn (two clicks forwards) but I will ask one of my friends with the LNF about the PCM swapping, I drive an LSJ so it is different on my car.

I got a spare pcm from Nick(BYT) and all I had to do was put the key in the ignition and leave it in accessory till the flashing alarm lock dash display went away, then try to start it. If it doesnt start, take key out and repeat. Took me 4 tries to it worked. pretty cool. now I can swap between them in like 2 seconds and have a tune and a stock PCM.
If it's from an '09, you can change the VIN with HPT but you may need credits. If you have a model year license and it's also from a Cobalt it should work.
Blank ones are different.
