Short Throw Shifters and Reverse Lockout

Good morning all,

Looking into getting a short throw shifter and having a hard time deciding. I would love to have a TMW, but the price is rather expensive once you add everything up. The Hurst is also of interest, however some websites state that you lose the reverse lockout for the T/C. After searching it appears that some can get the lockout to work while others can't. Can anyone confirm? Also, does anyone have any experience with the Hurst vs. TMW? Is it worth the price difference?

Thanks!

I haven't heard anything good about the Hurst, only negatives. TWM makes a quality product. It is pricey but that's what I would go with.

I'll add that for the money, I'd do other mods first. The stock shift distance on the T/C is pretty short as it is.

The TWM shifter is, by many people's opinions including mine, the best short throw shifter available for our cars. The TWM shifter retains reverse lock, and has a great deal shorter throw than the stock shifter. It also reduces the shifter height by 1 inch. A bit pricey? Yes. But a shifter being something you use the most in your car that has a direct affect on your driving ability, I say the money is worth it. I have a TWM and I don't regret spending the money at all. TWM customer service is also top notch if you need help with anything.

Dude, my suggestion: when it comes to sts, stay A BILLION MILES AWAY from any shifter that is not TWM. I really mean it. It is better to keep the stock one and keep saving until you can buy the TWM with weighted knob, clamp and bushings.
Also, as per Boosted4's post below, it makes you enjoy your ride much better. Really, stay away from anything that is not TWM branded. I have two LNF Cobalts, on one I have the whole TWM setup (weighted knob, bushings and clamp), and next summer I will start working on the other one, and the first thing I will buy is the TWM with the same configuration that I have on the other car. If TWM would obsolete the line of production, other than getting the Hurst or any other, I would keep the stock one.

TWM is 15% off right now also. I've heard just the base bushings help the stock shifter alot.
I'm waiting for my TWM black Friday sold them out . That's how popular it is .

Yeap, I have the TWM with upgraded bushings and clamps. Great shifter, only issue I have is it takes more effort to granny shift when you are being easy on your car.

But that is to be expected with any short throw because you have less leverage on the shifter and more effort is required to shift.

I've got the TWM with the bushings, no clamp though, and I love it. If you're poor like me (college student) just go with the aluminum knob instead of a fancy one until you save a bit more money for a fancy knob. That way it won't cost as much and you will still have a great shifter.

It's better to get the weighted knob right away. If you order it later, it is $ 100 alone.

Your right, I ended up getting the least expensive knob because at the time I didn't have money to be spending on car parts but it was such a good deal from TWM that I couldn't pass it up. So I got the bushings instead to kinda make up for it.

I think it is better getting the knob first and the bushings later. I have a friend with the standard know, and the difference is amazing. Plus, the standard knob is kind of wearing off

i had the hurst on 2 different cobalt ss/sc and loved it. you have to adjust both cables to have the reverse lockout work along with all of the gears going in easily. one cable adjusts the front to back engagment of each gear and the other cable adjusts side to side. that is the cable that people usually dont touch and leads to reverse lockout/5th gears issues. I loved the hurst, would put it on my ss/tc sedan, but i dont know how much longer i'm going to keep the car.

I got the TWM. Its a really nice piece. The comment about people having trouble finding reverse with trouble from the lock out part.... That has to do with the install. If you do everything right and make adjustments where needed during the install then you shouldnt have a problem.

Agreed on all accounts, just have to adjust the side to side motion while installing and the reverse lock out works like a charm. I bought the complete package as well.

Short Shifter itself, part way install
