Sounds like when my shift linkage roll pin broke in the shift assembly in my trans, it would go into gear sloppy. eventually my shifter would do circles. (No more H pattern).

does it look like it is in third when your in first?

Check the cable bracket on the top of the transmission! The bolts loosened and fell out on my car!

Before I moved to Florida I was driving back up to chicago. Same thing bolts fell out of the shift linkage bracket on the trans and then a month after it was fixed, the roll pin broke.

I forgot about the bolts

Engine bay by the fuse box. there is a bracket on top of the trans that holds the shift linkage. may have to raise vehicle and go through wheel well.

I think this it what your looking for. It's been a while.

Since it is a factory function on the Cobalt, NLS should be no issue with warranty. I think it is funny it gets argued about.

Did you ever find a fix? My shifter feels the same as you described, but the linkage bracket seems tight.
