Ss/tc Oil And Changing Frequency

Ok, 09 Cobalt Ss/tc Sedan. I Was Told Car Came With Mobil 1 And That You Should Do First Change At 3000 And Use Mobil Again.

I'm Thinking 3000 Miles For First Change And Using Chevy Filter But I Think I'm Going With Royal Purple 5/20 Weight Instead Of Mobil One And Then Changing Every 3500 Miles After That. What Do U Think?

And How Are The Ss/tc's With The Break In Process, First 500 Miles, Don't Go Above 3k And No Cruise Control, Or Do That For First 1000 Miles, Or No Break In At All?

And, Everyone I Assume Is Using 93 Octane, I Am, Shell V Power.

I broke it in according to owners manual. I change the oil when the DIC counter runs low (10%) and use mobil 1 (or equivalent synthetic) 5w-30.

Not sure why everyone tries to re-invent the wheel.

Speaking Of... How Reliable Is The Dic Counter? And 5/30? Oh, Thought It Was 5/20, Guess Not What Is Break In Process According To Owner's Manual, Yes I'm Lazy And Don't Feel Like Looking Through It

Very, the algorithm that dictates it has been around (and been constantly improved) since the early 90s. It has been gradually phased in and there have been no problems with it.

I highly question the algorithm. I'm at 4,7xx miles, doing some canyon driving and have tracked it. DIC says oil life is at 62% on the original oil. It I were to follow the DIC, my first oil change would be at 12,000 miles including track use.

honestly i would stick w/ mobil 1

Marc Arnold (if anyone in the stl area knows him or his black 93 cobra) he lost 3 horsepower switching from mobil 1 to rp.

Im friends with his son.

I changed mine at 1000 miles....

Break in was no redlining, and no NLS, no hard driving...

At 1400 miles I then tuned it and now have fun!

Maybe a naturally aspirated car with largely highway miles. Turbocharged, California traffic, heavy canyon driving, track use.........don't think I agree.

As you can tell above it really is by preference. My only suggestion is don't go below the oil life meter in the DIC. Also keep all your receipts and then the warranty gods should stay happy.

Track use may throw it off slightly, but it does take into consideration a large number of variables. 12k miles on a synthetic oil isn't unusual though, BMW suggests 15k mi change interval on their TT I6s. I've only gotten ~7k mi from my oil so far before the DIC drops to ~10%.

My
first change was at 3k and now I go by the dic and change it once it gets to 10 percent. And I check the duo stick from time to time and its always been good. And yeah mobile 1 and shell v power for me

I'm inclined to agree that it can go 10k without a problem. On the other hand, $40 oil change every 5,000 miles vs every 15,000 miles works out to $800 vs $266 over the course of 100,000 miles. You see where I'm going with this.....

I did my first oil change at 2,500 miles. I will continue to do so at every 2,500 mile interval no mater what the DIC says and I have used Mobil 1 in my last 2 vehicles (listed in sig) and never had a problem so I'll continue with them.

that cobra is sick!

I'll change my oil when it's below 10%...if there is a problem it will be fixed under warrenty.

Break-in procedure:
Drive it like you stole it, and leave two black marks from the dealership when you first buy it.

Most manuals say to vary vehicle and engine speed, and never stay at a constant RPM for too long.

I follow the DIC as if anything blows, GM gets to replace it so I don't care.
