What causes shifter to center?

I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem I posted in the drive train section. My shifter has very little to no ability to self center. I dont think its a cable adjustment issue, altho it may be a binding left cable . I need to understand what makes the shifter self center. Is it spring where the shift cable hooks to the trans?

It's the spring on the left side of the shifter assembly that centers the shifter left and right.

Checked to make sure your shifter cable bracket is still attached to the transmission?
