When to do First Oil Change?
When to do First Oil Change?
I have a brand new 2010 TC and would like to know when you guys think I should do the first oil change on it? It has 4700 miles on it now and the oil life is at 10% now. The car runs fine, just want to know if I should've done it sooner or if its ok to have gone this long on the original oil? Thanks.
Change it now and never listen to the oil life meter. My first change was at 1000 miles. I do mine every 3000 miles with mobil 5w30 full synthetic.
Because the oil life meter does not mean ****.

I did my first one at 500.. and then again at 3000..
It is usually a good idea to change it very early on a new motor, especially turbo motors. Motorcycles usually require changing the oil often at first, to get out new engine contaminates, such as metal shavings. New motors can get all kinds of stuff in there, plastic, glue, metal, dirt from the factory, since everything is new.
Never follow the oil life meter. Change it every 3000-4000. Clean oil = clean motor and less gunk build-up.
These are specialty motors with low tolerances. Oil is your cars blood, keep it clean and fresh.

Ok thanks guys. I figured I should've done it sooner, probably somewhere around 1000 miles or so. Looks like I'll be changing my oil tomorrow lol. Anybody have a particular filter I should use? Ive always gone with Fram.
You can listen to the guys telling you to change it every 3000 miles like they did 40 years ago, before today's tighter engine manufacturing tolerances and better quality oils, or you can listen to GM's instructions, written by the guys that designed, engineered, and built your car. (I think GM knows more than the armchair engineers!)
In the end, it's your call. Do what makes you happy and gives you peace of mind. The debate on oil change intervals will never end.

Your vehicle has the Engine Oil Life System, a computer
system that lets you know when to change the engine
oil and filter. This is based on engine revolutions and
engine temperature, and not on mileage. Based on
driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change
will be indicated can vary considerably. For the oil life
system to work properly, you must reset the system
every time the oil is changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has
been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is
necessary. A CHANGE OIL SOON message will come
on. See DIC Warnings and Messages on page 3-43.
Change the oil as soon as possible within the next
600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if you
are driving under the best conditions, the oil life system
might not indicate that an oil change is necessary for
over a year. However, the engine oil and filter must
be changed at least once a year and at this time
the system must be reset. Your dealer/retailer has
trained service people who will perform this work
using genuine parts and reset the system. It is also
important to check the oil regularly and keep it at
the proper level.

id let the first one run to about 3500-4500, then change it, you need time for the rings to seat and the factory oil has additives to aid in engine break in. you change it too early, you could end up with an oil burner down the line.
Besides if it didn't work down the road they would probably run into some serious issues. Even if only some were fixed under warranty it would cost them huge. The rest would just wreck any quality improvements they have made.
Show me where they put additives in the oil. I want to verify that.
Ac delco filter only. Walmart sells 5quart jugs of mobil 1 5w30 for $24 filter is like $5 at the dealer or auto parts store.
New Synthetic Oils do not need to be changed more than once every 12 to 15k miles. go look it up. Mobil 1 Synthetic is designed to last that long, they state only to change the oil filter.
I change my oil every 5 to 6k and used an engine treatment/cleaner at 40k. When I did it, the guy I brought it to swore my car could not have had more than 20k miles on it and said it looked like the cleanest engine he had ever used the treatment on.

That's the oil company... who is trying to sell you as much oil as possible. telling you that you only need to change your oil once every 15k miles
think what you want but you are wasting your money

You think GM, Toyota, Honda, and probably some others spent all that money and time making a system that calculates oil life just for ***** and giggles?

You're perfectly fine, I did my first change at 5,000 miles. Then contrary to the bad info, change it when the oil monitor says to. 3,000 mile oil changes are a myth and a waste of money. Modern oils have robust additive packages that will go well beyond 3,000 miles and likely beyond when the monitor says to change it. It wouldn't be in GM's best interests to put a 100,000 miles powertrain warranty on a car and then steer you wrong with recommended maintenance.
Mine goes off around 7,500.

Most people run standard oil in other GM cars. Standard oil can not last as long as the meters allow. 15k miles is way too much for standard oil. Even the manufactures of the oil don't rate them at those tolerances.
Dirt is getting into your engine all the time, filters don't filter everything out, neither do oil filters. It all ends up in your oil and forms silica an all kinds of crap that damages metal and builds up. When looking at torn down motors, you can tell the ones who ran normal oil for way too long, its called gunk, and it hinders performance.
Sure you can run oil for 15k at a time for 100k miles and your car won't explode.. by why not keep it clean and well taken care of? Generic gm oil tolerances aren't good enough for my maintenance schedule. I will remain and armchair engineer and change my oil every 3k. visually its dirty as hell at that point anyway. I actually like changing my oil anyway, its like therapy, and price really isn't a concern of mine, 30 bucks every few months.. pffft!
I believe last time I changed it, that's around where it was. I haven't been paying attention to it, but last time I did it seemed to be around there. My daily commute consists of around 70 miles; mostly highway. My GTP was generally around 7,500 also when I had it. I'm mostly stuck with people in front of me or in heavy traffic, so I don't have many opportunties to get on it a whole lot. But it generally does see redline at least once or twice in a day.
I changed mine at 1400 and then 6500. Oil life monitor on these cars are based off the synthetic fluid you are supposed to be putting in the enging alone with driving habits, most likely average RPM's since most of us don't granny shift or cars. Unless you baby your car all the time expect to change you oil every 5k or maybe just a hair more.
