05 Stage 2 Help

My 05 SS started acting up tonight. I drove 10 miles to BK, sat in line, and left 10 min later. I got onto the road, got in second and got about 75% into it. Put it into third, let off, and into 4th. While in it, it hit 14lbs like normal, and then dropped off, spiked again and my rpms dropped below 2k and the screen read " Engine Power Reduced". I pulled over, and let it idle. It held 5lbs while it sat there and then dropped off, and then held at 0lbs. The idle dropped to below 500rpms and rocked really bad...so I shut it off. Popped the hood, nothing out of the ordinary. I sat there a second, started it. Ran fine, pulled back on the road and into second, light comes on again..pull over, same thing. This time I checked the oil, all good, wasnt low at all. I parked it, won't have time to mess with it till morning.

I dont know if it threw any codes yet because the CEL was already on since I have no cat on it right now (Pulled it off 3 weeks ago, it was clogged. Car has run alot better, and not acted up at all until now.)

Car is Stage 2, Intake, No cat on stock exhaust, Hurst short throw, Tenzo lowering springs.

Im debating trying to drive it back to base tomorrow (about 7 miles). Have no idea how much a tow would cost out here.
Ill have time in the morning to try and get to Autozone and get their code reader and see what comes up.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

that happened to me a while back. it would do that then be fine for a few months then do it again. finally it crapped out. luckly i still had 1000 miles to go before my bumper to bumper went out. took it in and they had to replace the entire ECU said there were six codes thrown they could not fix.

Oh crap. Mine's out of warranty, an 05 with 68k.

If it is the ECU, what's one usually cost? I really don't have a whole lot of money for this.

not sure i think i went for over a year from the first time it did it to the time it crapped out so hopefully you have some time to save up. i would just unhook the bat and reset the ecu and it would run fine for a few months

Wouldn't that ruin my tune?

I'm thinking about selling my laptop to cover this. How much are the ecu's anyways?

I'm disappointed in the Cobalt right now.

let it sit longer than a few seconds. should be fine, its a safety precaution. if it continues to happen after a night of sitting there, could be a number of things. Take it to autozone or some autoparts place and they can scan the odb2 port for free.

Sounds like redline limp mode. Common problem at least on the redlines. Once I removed some of the codes with hp tuners (turned them off) hasn't happened again. I suggest you do that if you're out of warranty.

Ok. Its gone OFP now. Lulz.

I got it this morning, and it did it again. Got it back to base and it ran fine all afternoon. Went out after class and it just did it again.

Checked the air filter, and its a little dirty, not bad. Unplugged the battery for 10 min started it up again, CEL was gone, so I shut it off and pulled it off the jackstand. Started it up to drive back, and it does it again.

I'm leaving it for tonight until I can get it on base and into the hobby shop. I've seen in a couple other threads to check the alternator, fuel pump connections and clean my MAF.

Any other ideas?

I can't take it to the dealer, closest one is Phelps Chevrolet and its 30 miles away. I don't trust them, they already told me they wanted $250 for a stage 2 tune..$95 at a dealer near home.

Ill try and get on a computer later and read up some more on it.

better to read the CEL before unplugging batteries and such.

could be a bad crank sensor.

Threw two codes..
DTCP0068 and DTCP0069.

Cleaned the MAF off with carb cleaner and it didn't change a thing.

Plan on getting a new cat on this week. I'm hoping that this will make the MAF go normal, not bamking on it though.

How much are MAF's for these cars? Can't seem to find them online.

On the scanner, he said at idle the motor was at 25% load. The throttle was open to 13%..he said it should be at 1%. That can't be good.

I'm also wondering, do I need a new tune since the car has gone from Kansas to 29 Palms, Ca?

Which one is the nuisance code? Is it the camshaft position sensor? GM knows about this...it's not actually a problem.

Usually the codes you're reading are caused by the intake you have and the maf PLACEMENT not the actual maf. I say turn them off as they are just nuisance codes with your current setup (I'm guessing you have p0420 turned off for the NO cat).

CLEAN YOUR THROTTLE BODY and/or S/C Inlet. I wouldn't clean the maf with anything except that electrical safe stuff that doesn't leave a residue.

I ran without a cat in a high altitude environment for over 3 weeks. The car isn't designed to run without a cat. Stage 2 is safe, and definitely worth it. My car is just being a pain in the ass.

Ill be happy again after this weekend.

The throttle was open to 13%..he said it should be at 1%.
If I remember my car has always run between 14-17% open throttle at idle. If your car was running with 1%, everytime you let off the gas it would shudder and die due to lack of combustible air.

I don't trust those guys at autozone and partsource etc.. theyre glorified salesmen who think theyre mechanics.

I believe autzone has actual MAF cleaner you can buy, if not look for an intake system cleaner that says it's safe for sensors.

I'm also wondering, do I need a new tune since the car has gone from Kansas to 29 Palms, Ca?
Wouldn't hurt if it's a big difference in sea level.

If you're running aftermarket tunes I really recommend getting an Interceptor and a AFR sensor (if you get an Interceptor the Innovative LC-1 will hook right up to it). You need to know what your car is doing at all times.

Hope **** works out for you man!

Dealership called this morning. Apparently my intake wasnt on properly and is going to cost me $225 for them to fix it. AWESOME. I just messed with the intake last weekend, it ran for about 200 yards and did the engine reduced power again. Ill test drive with the tech and see if it does it again.
