6.5 Quarts for oil change?

So yesterday I took the cobalt in for an oil change. I took in my own oil to save some $. I took in 6qts for them to use. When they were about to finish they told me that with the oil I brought in I was still a half a quart low. I thought the car only took 6qts, atleast that is what the owner's manual says. Anybody have any info as to what the deal is? Thanks for any help.

6.5 qts. is what my dealer puts' in my SS all the time, and no body believes' that a 4 cyl. takes that much oil, but then remember that the car dose have a oil cooler in it.

can't tell you then, because i followed the manual, and had to go get more oil since it wasn't even close to full the first time i changed it. I even measured it to see how much came out be puting it back into the empties. and it was over 6.

It's probably attributed to the fact that some do not Pre-Oil the filter or diferences in the level of the car when the oil change is actually done.

6 Quarts seems to be the average, even if that does seem like alot, that is a good thing, that just means that there is approx 2 Quarts more than average for a 4 Cyl motor.

That 2 Quarts helps in cooling, the oil will last longer and provide etter protection

I'd like to see you try to do that! It's a "cartridge" style (not a spin-on) and inserts from above.

They cant design an engine to have an "exact" oil fill level I guess. But the data in the owners manual will always be rounded DOWN to the closest even quart. (to prevent overfilling)

But there was an error in the 2005 owners manual stating only 5.0 qts for the LSJ, it corectly states 6.0 in the 2006 book. However the amount needed to bring the level "perfect" will depend somewhat on the effectiveness of the draining process. Personally I have found on the Ecotecs that it's best to crack the seal and unthread the flter housing cap BEFORE draining the pan, for a more complete drain.

The manual for my Red Line says 6.75 qts. That's what I've always put in it and takes it right to the line.

Aparrently, according to my dealer after my oil change fiasco, the 2 liter takes awhile for the level to settle out. In other words, the drainback to the pan is rather slow when adding oil.
6 quarts.

In the 2005 Cobalt SS/SC GM service manual, there is an error because it's written 4,5 quarts.

It took roughly 6 quarts when we did mine.

Yea, my manual states 5.0 qts, but I have been putting 6.5qts in it because of it being so low when changing it...

Exactly, 6.5 is way too much. After 3 oil changes 6.0 is perfect.

You can still pre oil the filter, Just let it soak in and then dump the majority out. The Remainder will soak into the filter..

6qts for me. I ALWAYS run mine slightly low to avoid foaming from the crank sloshing in a full pan.

Should not happen, There is a baffle intergrated into the lower crank plate.
