Advancing Timing?
Advancing Timing?
Ok so kind of a newb question but cant find and answer. i plan on going 60#'s and a 2.7", i also will be buying meth for my car. i am going to have a local speedshop tune it but can someone explain to me what advancing the timing does and why you can benifit from it

Roughly: More Timing = More Power
TOO much timing on too low of an Octane = Knock = Engine go boom eventually.

so i fill up with 93 all the time with the 93 + meth it'll be about the same as 107-110 octane i read, so when i have them tune it they will pull more timining to make more power?
They will probably advance the timing a few degrees to make more power, yes. Has this shop ever tuned a Cobalt SS before?
I recommend NOT doing that... and spending the money on getting a Wicked Tune from Wicked2005SS.
It'll only run you like $200... which I am going to guess is a lot cheaper than what you will pay that shop.
And Wicked has A LOT more Cobalt Tuning experience than them... I guarantee it!
I just got mine tuned by him. Love it!
You should go to the Cobalt meet in Columbus on Apr 19. He could tune it for you then... as long as you talk to him and arrange it to be done.

i know it will lower my IAT2's greatly @WOT. ^^^^werewolf i have read your Q&A on meth and wanted to know what your personal opinion is on it, how much of a difference did it make on your car?
i won't have all my parts till around april 30th. i have prom in 2 weeks so no $$ right now.
and the shop does not have any cobalt tuning experience, in fact when i called them and was telling them what i will have the told me "well we have done some turbo cavi's" lmao.
i dont have a wideband, and would like a fairly aggressive tune so i dont know how that would work

i don't know where wicked is from but your pretty close to indy so if your willing to drive here there is a guy that tuned all the cobalts around here. he's cheaper than 200 bucks too. but i have heard good things about that wicked guy too.
i was thinking of having area47 possibly doing it cause he's damn good at it, especially when it comes to tuning with meth

Hey Altiery54,
I added to the meth Q&A thead recentley detailing a little with my experience with meth.
I'm still fine tuning it as I have a leak problem and havn't fully sealed it yet. (Been a busy work week haven't had time yet) But even with some of the fluid gettin out I put Nate's 2.8 pulley on checked my Aeroforce gauge on several third gear pulls and no knock!
As for IAT2 temp they still get to 140 and stay still there but it seems like it takes longer to get there. I don't know if this is because liquids getting out or not. So I'll have to test when I seal it. The Supercharge case it self is defintly cooler by comparission and after multiple runs I can put my hand on it and hold it there as it is mildly warm comparred to the old burn your hand off before that.
I'll be updating that thread in a week or so after I seal the leak and had some more experience with it.

Here's a little I leard from talks with Area and Steve about how to do Advanced timing for HPtuners
1. ETC adder – zero it out below 230*.
2. AFR adder - zero it out.
3. IAT adder - zero this below 140*.
4. In the stock stage 2 HO table reduce all the cells from .56 to 1.36 by 2 to 3* across the board and this will be my base to start with.
5. Flash the new table and go logging at WOT to find out where my WOT range is and pattern by logging with Main Spark vs. Timing Advance (table # 1) of the Histogram Configuration file. (Save log for reference)
6. Now Once you have logged Main Spark vs. Timing Advance keeping in mind that 14* of knock is your knock artificial ceiling but not set in stone.
It is now time to start adding timing to your HO table. Go out and do a WOT run and log the run with the Main Spark vs. Knock Retard (Table #2) of the histogram Configuration file. Monitor the cells that show KR with a cell count more than 1 as a cell count of 1 may be just phantom knock. Reduce the cells that show KR by 1* of timing and then smooth the table around the effected cell/cells. Once you have tuned the cells with KR add 0.5* off timing to the remaining unaffected cells and save the file and re-flash the car. (You can keep adding timing if car can handle it then back off 1 degree once you find the point you get KR)
Continue the procedure, adding 0.5* of timing to the un-effected cells until you have reached the last cell in your map that showed KR. Back off the timing by 1* smooth the area and you are done tuning your HO table for optimal performance and HP. Toe–in timing to come later.
7. Now copy the HO table to your LO table and back off the timing across the board by 3 -4* of timing and your LO table is complete. Save the file and flash it to your car. Time to go and log a few good pulls to se how she all runs.

Give this thread a good read. There is a lot of good information in here on how to tune Your MAF, VE if you want but some would say not nessessary, Advanced Timing.
Let me know if you need help understanding anything.
Cheers
