B & M Short throw

Anyone install this yet, I just got mine in last night and am having trouble getting the stock one apart. the *** and boot are in the way. The directions say kut a strap holding the boot on and take rotate the clip to slide down. it also says to just pull the *** off. No luck, any info would be great. have a race this weekend and the car is apart.... HELP

Check the how-to section, there's a how-to on how to remove the stock knob.

Also, I believe the only short throw out there from B&M is for the 2.2 (possibly 2.4) Cobalts but it will fit ours...however our shift knob assembly is different so the instructions included with the shifter will not work for ours. Hopefully the how-to will answer your questions.

I had the funniest thing happen to me when I was installing my B&M. My and my friend got tired and sick of trying to get the knob of the stock one. We sawed it off! By hitting it on the floor and slaming it hard and stuff we finally cut it in two pieces and as the two halfs became apart the knob came off. The stock knob is just plugged in there hard, it is not screwwed or nothing. Just band it a couple of times and itll come off, Youll be better off with a few slams than with a shifter cut in two pieces.

yeah I checked the how to for the knob removal and thats not working either. i don't want to cut it either. When I talked to modernperformance they said the shifter was for the 2.0, but i don't know.
I hope i don't have this much trouble with the Strutbar.

The B&M is for the 2.0, I have it in my Red Line. Getting the knob off takes brute strenght since it is just pressed on. The strap it tells you to cut to remove the boot is really a zip tie that is around the top of the boot.

The B&M currently out is for the 2.0 Cobalts but the last I heard from a local dealer is to expect one for the 2.2L (not sure about the 2.4) sometime in January though I would expect that to be pushed off a little bit.

The part number for the B&M shifter for the 2.0 SS/SC is 45187. I installed this in about 2 hours(only for the same reason------never got the knob off the old shifter). See my thread titled "frigin' shifter install".

P.S. I really, really like the new shifter....................Going to be cold on the hands in the winter though

I had the dealer do mine and they told me that GM instructions tell the mechanics to drill the original knob, which is how they got mine off.

Lucky for me mine shift knob had fallen off so many times that by the time I went to install the B&M it wouldn't stay on at all anymore.

Be careful when yanking on the shift knob becuase a few Red Liner's have smacked themselves in the nose when the knob finally lets loose.

you could also try boiling the knob end of the shifter

it should help loosen its grip on the lever

I just skipt the step, removed the entire shift asembly then wrapped it in a rag, put in in the vice and smacked it with a rubber mallet. came off after 2 good smacks.

The new shifter is sweeeeet. I love it. But this morning it was 46 when I got in my car and DANM was that thing cold.
