Big problem... (Blown?)

Hi. I'm having a lot of trouble with my Balt. I recently have been getting around 3-6 MPG. I'm really going through gas like water. I've also noticed that my oil has a gas smell. Very strong smell if I let the Balt sit for a little. I'm smoking. What's wrong? Any idea's?

Head Gasket. Me Thinks..

Does the oil look like A Double Double Coffee? Water In The Oil?

Regardless, Take it to a dealer..

Took it to a dealer, and (of course) everything is fine. Yea, ok.

Actually, oil looks very light colored. Almost clear, with a brown tint. Very loose, not thick like normal.

Did you tell the dealer you are getting 3-6 mpg lol. And do they know your car is a cobalt and not a suburban?

Ok, well than the oil might be diluted with Gas.

Gas will act like a thinner in Oil...

I suggest taking it to the dealer and asking them to drop a quart out of the car into a clean container and comparing it to new oil.

Thickness and color (Esp Smell if there is Gas in it)
Rings are another more likely cause of Gas in the Oil..

Yea. They need "proof". Shown them the reciept, and everything. They just don't want to dish out the cash for parts.

Car at idle is very rough and sounds like someone trying to learn stick.

Rings? No smoke though. Maybe...

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator may be stuck open letting full fuel pump pressure to the injectors causing a MAJOR OVERLY RICH condition. Fuel is probly dripping out of injectors into the intake. Any CEL? Running rough? Lack of power? GO to a different dealership, yours is one I would recomend to stay away from for service work.

CEL? Rough at idle. Lack of power sometimes, other times very powerful.

Have to find a good dealership.

Check Engine Light, the yellow lit up engine in center of instrument closter. Dont drive it if you can help it. I know not everyone has alternat transportation. You could wash the cyliders with overloaded gas in oil. Take a knowledgeable person to the service department with you next time. Sometimes those guys dont understand unless you speak AUTOMOBILE language.

There's no way you are getting 3-6 MPG without there being a fuel leak. It's impossible to force that much fuel through that engine and it still run. Your cat would be clogged and your engine would stall constantly.

Emissions code + gas smell leads me to believe your gas cap is loose and or someone is stealing your gas. Get a locking cap.

I love how everyone automatically thinks the dealer is wrong... oil is clear with a dark tint when it is new and 5-30 is not by any means thick oil. It gets darker with mileage as it absorbs the deposits.... sheesh

It's not impossible. Very hard and rare, but not impossible.

I have a locking gas cap already. Have had one for a while.

No, but it looking almost clear with a faint brown tint, being extremely watery and smelling like gas isn't normal. I have an appointment at Imperial Chevy this weekend. They seem a lot more car savy than Simon already. lol

+1 on this. Fred@SMG did my Clutch, exhaust and Stg2 + tune. I would go to him for any work that's not covered under warranty.

No, it is impossible. 15ish maybe. Is your oil level above where you filled it in the prior oil change? I'm guessing not.

You guess wrong. It's almost twice as high. It's about 1cm up the rod piece.

Guess he's talking about the dipstick.....

For it to be getting the gas mileage of a v-12 there has to be something more to it...I'm confused about how this can happen.....

Dude, you need to relax. You are acting like you are the only one who knows anything. This guy came on here to ask questions, not to get negative responces.

Thank you.

Seriously, I have an appointment for tomorrow for Imperial Chevy to have it checked out. They seem to be a lot better than Simon already.

I'm trying to get some correct information from him. I am trying to help and he is not helping me help him.

I am talking using LOGIC. "How can a 2.0L engine get "3-6" MPG" It can't. Telling me I am wrong when he clearly doesn't understand is not helping the issue.

If you don't know what a oil dipstick is and you are telling me I am wrong about something I am going to get a little annoyed...

BTW Locking gas caps can also throw emissions codes if they don't seal 100%.
