Clutch slipping at 500 miles?
Clutch slipping at 500 miles?
Well I got into my car today after work and got on to the highway, i was in 3rd ger at 40 and gave it some gas to speed up to the speed limit, and when iget 3000rpm all it did was start reving so i quickly get off the road and pop the hood. smoke and burning clutch smell was all there was. What the hell 500 miles on the car and the clutch gives? I havent even taken the car past 4k yet because i was still breaking it in. GM said that the bumper to bumper warranty doesnt cover the clutch. Any ideas on this? Luckily i got home but had to feather the crap out of it. I am so pissed off right now

Yea go back to them and say something about you heard it is covered for 1 year/12,000 miles. Also threaten to go corporate if they dont investigate and stop blowing you off. If they blow you off again go to corporate and get it addressed.

there has to be something about manufacturer defects, and i just moved it in the driveway and lets says my asphalt driveway is now red tranny fluid galore. **** this piece of **** car.

To the poster, I wouldn't even waste my time putting a stock one back in. Since you're probably going to have to pay for it anyway, just get a stronger, aftermarket one. Welcome to the club, alot of us have had that issue, see my sig. Good luck and take care.
Go to the dealer. Yes, a clutch is considered a wear item, so it is not generally replaced. However, if it is worn out after 500 miles and you can prove you know how to drive, a good dealer will fight for you and get a replacement from GM. Warranty replacement is often open to the interpretaion of the GM tech working on your car. II am sure they will agree that is a little early for it to quit on you!
At least go to the dealer and try to get a new one. Even if you have never driven stick before (I know you have) you would really have to suck to toast a clutch in 500 miles. A clutch does need a break in period, so I hope you have been very easy on it. Launching the car when new or full throttle acceleration could toast a new clutch if you seriously abused it.
I am almost wondering if there is something wrong with the assembly of the clutch or transmission. There may be a defect or other mechanical failure there causing the problem. I know that many of the 6-speed 2006 Corvettes have a recall out for misaligned clutches that are causing pre-mature wear or failure. Maybe something similar is happening with the Cobalts?

My clutch went at 500 miles too, tell them that you know how to drive a stick and that its a load of crap if they argue tell them ull call the better business bureau unless they fix you car under warrenty
well chevy roadside assistance is on the way here to pick it up. The guy on the phone told me that they will cover it under warranty since i bought it 3 days ago. So hopefully everything will go well. we will see 2marrow.
I had the breaks on my S10 replaced at 13K becouse they looked fine but the truck would pull to the right under braking and they could not find the problem.
GM will replace almost anything but gas if you know how to talk to them.
I have not had any real problems with my car other than a sensor comeing unpluged so I have not realy had to deal with them with this car yet. But I can tell you this, I have stagee 2 and almost 4k on the car now and Im not haveing any problems at all with my clutch.

!!! Read My Post In Drivetrain !!!
When driver error isn't to blame most clutch problems in these cars eminate from incomplete engagement.
My car had a faulty slave cylinder that was hanging up when the clutch was about 95% engaged.

well the dealership called me today and gave me a rental, peice of **** grand prix, but they told me it was the front seal on the tranny blew, which of course put more wear on the clutch trying to feather it into gear to get it home. bottom line is new clutch getting installed, and possibly new tranny depending on whether they can fix the seal if there wasnt to much internal damange. ETA about 4 days. I will miss it. On the upside i was talking to the parts manager while i was up there and he offered me stage 2 at a 50% discount. 425 installed!!!!!! So that will also be put on while in the shop. So everything worked out well after all.

The front seal on the trans was probably defective, that happens.

50% off nice deal bro
glade they are working with you
ha luckily i bought 2 cars from them in the past 3 months so they like me a little. The main reason they did not blame me was because they hooked my car off so the computer, and apparently our cars have black boxes, because they knew the fastest my car had gotten too, how long my last trip was and all kinds of stuff. Since they saw my top speed in the car was 85 since im still breakin her in they let it go.
