Cobalt SS MOBIL1 synthetic oil from factory
I just wanted to inform Cobalt SS owners that GM decided to put MOBIL1 full synthetic oil in our cars from factory. Now what I dont understand is why? I taught It was bad to break in the engine with full synthetic oil. Can anybody shed some light on this matter.

I have heard people say it's bad to break an engine in on synthetic, but never anything conclusion or absolute. I try to not make absolute generalization about anything in this world, especailly technology.

you better use what the book says until you are out of warranty . Im sure they are using mobil 1 because of the heat generated by the super charger .I have been using mobil 1 for over 20 years beat the **** out of my cars never an engine problem. The reason they didnt use it to break in motors was the rings woudnt seat and seals didnt swell up and you had leaks .But that was in rebuilt motors not new. Just take it easy for first 500miles no 8000 grand hole shots. 90mph panic stops,etc. and you will greatly extend the motors life.

Um, not it isn't. I'm not going to go into the semantics of hot test, but there's a decent chance that your engine never started until after final assembly in the car.
Basically, these rings, valve seals, and other misc. sealing devices are not as sensitive to the conventional/synthetic oil situation. Conventional is also good for the initial assembly since synthetic is so thin, but this is not a problem on a mass produced engine. Finally, these engines are so clean during assembly that Mobil 1 is AOK.
Mobil 1 is also the factory fill on LS7's, LS2's, LC3's, and LH2's. I'm probably forgetting some also.

I believe that the Mobil 1 is probably due to the nature of the engine, being it's supposed to be a SS with performance upgrades and a Supercharger on it, it'll be better for this type engine. It does suck when MOBIL1 is about 4.85 a quart at Wallly-World though. However, some engines are designed to have synthetic, and shouldn't be changed to conventional, and vice versa. My dad has a Cadillac STS with the Northstar V-8 and he was told to put synthetic in it. Since then his engine has been burning synthetic like crazy until he had it changed back to conventional.

our engines are designed to use a full synthetic to help reduce temperature, and for the pistons squirts.
as far as break in not as much is required with these engines because the whole block is cast which greatle reduces the seems and machining line in which engines used to be built.
and the engines are all run before installed, most of the time it's from the engine production company before shipped to the assembly plant. this is the case for most if not all of them

I have Amsoil 5-30 and Amsoil filter ready for my first change. Never sprung the $ for them before but now that I have a new SS figured good a time as any to try it out. I'm ****-retentive on monitoring gas mileage so will post to the gas thread if there were any changes after I get the Amsoil in....I'm doubting it but we'll see.
