Cooling Mod Idea...

Has anyone used a different type of coolant resevoir than hatrickstu to introduce more coolant into the system. The universal coolant tank looks cheap IMO. Has anyone used another cobalt coolant tank like option B but where it does something?

I will be installing the tank from a 03 Cobra on mine. It only doubles the capacity of the stock system, but its better than nothing, and the lines will be already ran for when someone does build a better box....

I picked one up for $20 bucks. Was going to install it last week, but then I realized I am leaking a bit of oil from the plug on the head on the passenger side. So to the dealer for warranty work on Friday first....

The theory is adding more capacity to the i/c coolant system to reduce temps...I'm sure it works and any tank should do it... you'll need some new hose but it'll cost around 10 bucks max. Altogether 30 bucks if you diy...not knocking stu just informing. I plan on using the option b tank when I get around to it...if I don't do the killerchiller deal. I have a lot on my plate. Using a washer fluid resevoir in your fender well would also work but you'd need to do some cutting and it would take more hose...would be bigger capacity though.

I definitely was thinking about that earlier. The hard part would be to find a way to get down there where you can cut and all that because there is either a metal or plastic sheet between that and the engine compartment...

Actually in retrospect don't use a windshield resevoir because most have a flap cap and the system is pressurized...get a resevoir with a locking cap. I was looking and I'm less worried about fit and more worried about capacity...seems like there aren't many tanks the size of the option b tank. I'll add something soon enough and make it work...mounting shouldn't be a problem, the rl has a huge area on the passenger side.

Buy it off a wrecked car. My second tank costed me like 35.

BTW, I also have plans drawn up to make aluminum tanks, I'm just hoping to work with a vendor on here to do it. I'm kinda curious to see what Fast98 has in store and how much it'd run. It'd save me the hassle.

I don't know...the cobra ic res that I saw was really small. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-...spagenameZWDVW

The whole idea is to increase the capacity so I'm going with something like the c5 reservoir or the jaguar xk8 reservoir because they are much larger...yeah I was ebay scouring.

yea, thats not the Cobra I/C res. It is small, and will only DOUBLE the capacity of the stock system. For now though, its the only option I have found that has 3/4 inlets and outlets already molded in. Also has a threaded pressurized cap. The option B tank does not have this (outlets that is.). People seem to be missing that point. The RES has to have 3/4 inlets and outlets to work. You can either find a tank with them molded in, wich there are none except for the Cobra I/C res that I have found, or cut a hole in plastic and thread it in there. Looks ghetto IMO. So for now, until I can find one thats better, or until someone makes one from metal, the Cobra I/C res doubles the capacity, and when something comes that is better, the hoses are already ran so its just a simple swap. You can pick them up for less than $30 from Stang forums. There is no way your going to find a wrecked, unmolested Cobra in a junkyard.

Yes ours is aluminum. It will be made for the cobalt first as I don't have a redline handy.

I used the Cobra one as well, after the coolant tank and hoses, i added 2 liters of extra coolant. And like stated i like the clean look of it with its 3/4 nipples molded into the plastic, the pressure release cap. The design is also better, hot water comes into the top of the tank and cold water goes out the bottom.

I also have a cobra reservoir waiting to be installed. I wouldn't want to add too much fluid to the system because even though the more you add will take longer to heat up, it's also going to take longer to cool off.
