crankcase hole

So today I found out that my crankcase has a hole. Is this something GM will be able to sell me or am i going to have to go and beat up a cobalt ss owner and drive away in their car and take it because I don't feel like buying a new motor. Please help.

106 is the crankcase

um, those are matched to the block iirc. so unless you want to have the extra machine work done(and you still have to tear down the engine completely) then i would recommend another engine, what happened / whah is wrong with it? pic?

Crank Casing, Hell you might as well get a new motor to put in there. There may be another way of fixing it you can find someone to weld aluminum but I would be sure how well that would work the crankcase is the bottom of the motor where the crank sits. So I would just suggest possibly getting a new or used motor and rebuilding.

well, something caused the "hole". It should be torn down to see what happened.

Axle snapped and started hitting the crankcase and opened up a hole there and all the oil spilled. I was planning on taking the motor out and just buying the crankcase and tearing it apart.

go with the whole engine for now and use that one as a base for a build...if you want to build one that is. otherwise your car will be down waaaaaay longer and cost alot more than you would expect.

This will help you out .... basically a step by step to get the motor out and back in. The lsj build book is a great source of info ....start with chapter 2 for engine removal. Do you have access to a lift?

You sure can. Find someone in your area who can weld aluminum. However, if they have to heat the whole thing, it may tweak and there goes your bearing clearances.

Also, there are many epoxies on the market now that could be used to patch the hole. Cylinder head porters use them all the time, and they can take the heat as well.

JBWeld might even work. Get the industrial strength version.

Can you get us a photo of the hole?

Ron

Would it be safe to weld it? My brother has a picture of the hole. Hopefully he'll be able to post the picture. I'm at work at the moment. It kind of sucks that GM won't sell a short block.

gm will sell a short block, you just have to know where to look, and 3200!?!?!?! i would say get a used engine from a yard complete for 1500-2000. and when the pics are up it will be much easier to give an opinion as to weather it can be welded or JBwelded.

I've called chevy tech support, went to the dealer. They keep telling me they don't sell a short block. Where could I look? I give GM customer service They are so crappy. They want to charge me 5000 to install the motor. I'll do it myself. Hopefully I could just weld it. Thanks for your help guys my brother will post the pics later.

Even if you could find a junk block and cut and splice that area. You'd still have to R&R the engine and you'd need a REALLY good TIG welder but it COULD be done. Avoid splitting the block and crank case as the two together would be much less likely to warp. But I'd just bite the bullet for a new engine rather than spend all the money to repair then something else go bad and have to spend the money anyway AFTER already spending the money to fix it. But it's YOUR call.
