Custom intake pipe

I have an 06 SS/SC and I was thinking of building my own intake. I'm already getting a lean bank 1 CEL, following my airbox mod. So obviously changing the slightest amount of air throws the computer off. In the SS/SC intake thread I didn't see any home made intake setups, maybe because it's a bad idea!? The big problem I see is finding a steel MAF adapter boss to weld onto the intake pipe. Cheapest one I saw was ~$40 on fleabay.

I have experience welding and have some spare 3" mandrel steel bends. I just thought I'd give it a try. I'm about to install a new header, downpipe, 60s and a 2.8 as well so I will need a tune anyway. I figured maybe I could find a way to get past the air filter throwing a CEL with a decent tune. If anyone can give me reasons why I shouldn't do this I'd appreciate the input. I don't want to waste my time or my nice mandrel bends if this is futile! Thanks in advance.

I'd say look at the ZZP 3 inch intake and go from there if you want to make your own.

With the proper tune it should be fine but keep in mind that it'll probably be harder to tune than the prebuilt ones. Really it's all in the tune so I recommend talking to the tuner for where he likes the MAF mounted.

stock airbox setup is 3 inch. you did the airbox mod already so I would call it a day. Staged did all the testing

get it tuned along with your other parts

the moment you change the position of the MAF you have to re tune its a problem. Machining a part is expensive; frankly for the gains if any being marginal, I would leave it alone. But as you are a welder, find a machinist to make something like this which would really improve performance using straightening fins. we made this for the new ATS Cadillac.

using alloy makes it easier to make the MAF Bung and the fins. but its a lot of work.

ZZP as a vendor is reliable with a proven track record of good engine application reseach, sound technical applications and customer service. Other vendors regretably may not be as good.
