Drag Racing Technique

All right, I took, my 05 Cobalt SS to the 1/8 mile track and I ran ******* times.

I ran a 10.09 for my best at like 80 mph. The thing is I couldn't get it to hook up at all, I've dropped it from 5,000 all the way down to 1,500 and even slipped it.

I cannot get it to hook.

Is anyone else having this problem? The car isn't modified at all except a hollow cat.

Give me some ideas guys cuz I lost about 5 times in a row.

Does the hollow cat make much difference?

You need to work on your launching technique, i know N/A SS's can run better than that stock, I dare say 2.2's arent very far behind your time.

Try a search on launching

2.4L SS IS NOT GOING TO TRAP 80MPH, your trap shows your power, but your slow ET shows that you cant get it off the line,

I can get 2.2 and 2.3 60' times by just rolling off the line as if i am driving to the grocery store.

After your launch, when your in first. Do you go WOT in first? I have this issue with flooring it in first and then lighting them up.

ok ill tell ya step by step.

Dont do a burn out...

get staged..

then pull out the clutch to just b4 it grabs and hold it there... and dont give it any gas

on the last yellow light, give just a bit of gas to squeek the tires while slipping the clutch out... but dont burn it too much... then feel what the tires are doing and go WOT if you have traction... and then powershift into 2nd.

An 05 SS is not a 2.4

what is powershifting? I just tap the clutch and slam the gear without lifting the gas pedal, is that powershifting?

I had similar problems with getting traction at the track when I went a few weeks ago. Over here in NJ when I went, I went to Island Dragway, and by the time I got to run the temps went down to low 50's, high 40's. They don't prep the track very well, so traction was almost non existant. I tried techniques that were discussed on the board (like Tofu's guide to 1/4 mile) and still had problems getting the tires to stick. I had my front tires at 23-24psi and did not burn out before some runs, while others i did a burn out. Maybe it was just luck, but it seemed that the runs with a burnout were slightly faster. My trap speeds ranged from 96-98mph, but my e.t's ranged from 14.6-15.3. My only mod is a CAI, and I was hoping for low 14's. Your best bet is to upgrade the suspension (motor mount, strut bar, or whatever) or perhaps a set of slicks for the front or drag radials. If we could get good traction, our e.t's would improve greatly. Next time I go to the track will be with a set of d.o.t. drag radials.

look at your boost guage when you're in first if you are above 5psi you are going to slip everywhere give it 40-45% throttle in first then WOT when you hit 5500rpm then shift at like 6250 so you don't hit your rev limiter. I have a video on street fire somewhere and race another cobalt, you can see my guages to see how i leave and how he leaves, he gives it more throttle than me.

i dont get it... i hope youre not implying that i need to drive better. i havent seen any stock times better than mine as of yet. anyway, i just dont see how he has such a high time, but still traps higher... doesnt make sense. i havent ever seen a stock cobalt trap that high in the 1/8 and i have watched many run it too. not to say that he didnt... just curious.

Usually with drag racing... the higher times and trap means a crappy 60ft. You probably had a way better 60' then him, thus better ET, thus lower trap speed.

Thus Drag Racing 101.

gotcha! see now that explains it pretty good. glad to see someone is helpful rather than smart ass about it. and yes i did have a pretty good 60'. it was barely over 2.1, i dont remember if it was 2.12 or 2.14.

and as for any tips, you might wanna lower your tire pressure a little. that helped me out a little. everyone has explained how you launch already.

Yeah 2.1 is really good, he probably had a 2.4.

Not sure how I trapped 80 mph ;-)

But, not worried about speed, the trap does show the power well but the time doesn't speak well for the car.

To answer the way above question, yes the hollow cat made a difference but now I'm throwin a code all day long. I just recently also cut off the muffler and fabbed my own straight pipes out of an old diesel muffler and a four inch tip that sounds pretty damn mean. I took it to GMR-Speed today for a quick dyno run to get a baseline of what I was running and it pissed me off.

I ran 201.1 horse and 183.4 torque.

I do not know what happened....

As far as the high trap speed I'm hoping to improve that with the new flowing exhaust system, it flows a lot better and I cut about 1/2 second off my zero-sixty time. The car has a lot more ***** now above 100, I did a quick top speed run on the highway home and put it up to around 145 and she had plenty more but then we got pulled over so....

Actually that would help prove that he is right. Because I am sure an SS/SC has a lot more top end pull then the 2.4 SS. Similar ETs, the car with more power will have a higher trap.

Just jumped around and stole some times off other "cars" in other "forums"

Stage 2 with TOYS SRT - 4
1/8 9.021@80.45mp
9.286 @ 81.05
8.4504 @83.59

Stock SRT - 4
8.940@80.45

Randoms off Mustang Forums
98 GT - 283 HP - 8.979 @ 82.321 MPH
96 GT - 300 HP - 8.774 @ 80.24 MPH
96 GT - 281 HP - 8.000 @ 83.06 MPH

Random STI's
8.914 @ 78.79

Do you see a problem here? Sure we trap better then most other cars, but not a single one of THOSE cars listed above ran over a 9.2... Yet he ran almost a 10.1 and trapped at 80, stock... That's awesome man you have the best supercharger ever. Introduce me to your dealer plz...

Problem with all those times and numbers is that you left out probably the most important one.... THE 60' TIMES!

Yes, your 60ft time does matter but the fact of the matter is that all those cars would rape you as they sit. So what does this mean? Theres no way that you are trapping 80 MPH in the 1/8. Now, i don't mean to flame, but i just think you are mistakened when you claimed you went 80 MPH in the 1/8th.
