Dry Ice Cooling?
Dry Ice Cooling?
Ok so a little backgroud info...
A few weeks ago I set another personal best at the track under the worst possible conditions. The day was beautiful, hot, the track was sticky and everything was good... except my IAT2's...
WARNING: For those of you not fond of high IAT2s please hit 'back'
At the end of my runs I was averaging 175 degrees!! Then at the end of the night we hotlapped a lap, which ended up being my fastest ever, and my IAT2s at the end were a whopping 201 degrees!!!!!! I almost puked.
The very next week I went online and tried to order a heat exchanger, but OTTP was sold out and couldnt get it to me in time before the meet this Saturday
So I'm looking for a way to cool at the track so that I'm not losing so much timing. I was told by my tuner that I could be losing in the way of 20-30 hp which is rediculous!
My idea was to bring some DRY ICE and put it in a sack and lay it on the supercharger and cool the **** out of it. Of course I wont be hotlapping at all so there will be time to let it cool. My questions would be:
Will this work?
What percautions should I take with cooling the supercharger this way?
Is it going to hurt anything?
Any other opinions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

something that cold directly on the metal might change the molecules of the metal around and make your metal brittle.. i wouldnt do it,maybe a bag of ice right on the supercharger will be a better ideal.
there is no time to get a meth kit here, install, and tune for it!
I will have to cool it slowly. Just so its cold to the touch, not frozen to the coore (to the point where the metal starts to shrink)

the problem with the ice is it creates too much water and thats a big no no at the track. Not to mention when the sc is so friggen hot it just melts away before it actually cools anything.
Hmmm I wonder...
will a dirty air filter cause IAT temps to be higher than they should? I just got to thinking that I remember last year racing on a day where the abiant temps was crazy high like +30 degrees celcius and my IAT2s never were over 170...

If your going to do something like that then grab the stu mod and toss some dry ice into that. It also sounds like your i/c pump isn't working, I would get under the car and hit it with a hammer until you hear it come on. If your going to put ice on something, I would put it on the cold air intake. Granted this won't do much but if your going to put DI on something, don't put it on the s/c. It would be pretty hard to crack the s/c, but it's still possible I am assuming. Never put something extremely cold on something very hot, especially on a car lol.
As everyone else has said meth would be great for you!

I would put money on it that your IC pump is on its way out, those temps are pretty ridiculous. I saw the same type of temps at the track when my IC pump was out. Just jack the car up and hit the i/c pump gently with a hammer tell it turns on.
is the pump suppose to be running the whole time the car is on or does it only come on at certain times. Few times i looked at the resivor tank and there wasnt anything flowing, but then later on there will be.
Rob if u bring dry ice, can i have some to keep my rum and coke cold? lol

So turn the car on (when its hot or cold does it matter) then crawl under and tap it wiht a hammer and see if it comes on?
How long do I have to hit it before it comes on? How will I know if its on its way out or not?

It doesn't matter if the car is hot or cold, the I/C pump is located on the front of the car by the tranny mounts. Jack the car up and start it, if you don't hear a whine from the pump keep hitting it until you do, eventually it will kick on. Might take 2-3 hits, might take 5-10 hits. Eventually the damn thing will kick in. You might have to do this once a week or once a month to keep it running, its hard to tell. Or you can buy a new bosch ford lightning pump from ottp for about 120 bucks.
carry a spay bottle and mist your radiator, and h/e. mist them until water stops evaporating off them. That way when you fire her up she will have nice cool coolant. As longs as the water you use isn't too cold it won't hurt them.
