Exhaust Cutout
Exhaust Cutout
Is anyone running an exhaust cutout on their cobalt? I searched and didn't find one post with any info. I understand nobody makes a kit for the car but a custom fabricated settup isn't all that difficult. I am conserned that with a cutout their will be too little back pressure and I will throw codes and maybe hurt the motor. Would a small diameter pipe give me just enough back pressure? I would love to put the exit right behind the passenger front tires but there isn't a lot of room there, any sugestions?? Some of the basicaly stock SRT4's in the local car club I'm in run them and spit flames, they are cat-less of course, does the turbo in those provide addiquate back pressure that our exhaust wont?? Any help would be appreciated!!

i didn't mean anything by my comment, i was really asking why he wants to do it... i didn't tell him not to, or that it's a stupid idea, just curious as to why he would want to do that...
your car won't spit out flames like an srt4... keep in mind with this setup there's no muffler, it's going to be loud as hell... def. won't pass inspection... not sure about a code, i don't think it will give you one though...

I was thinking about it to gain a few horse power but mostly I'm sure it would sound amazing. I would really like to spit flames but I am pretty sure that I would need to go to a catless downpipe to run it from. As far as because my freinds have it that is more of an introduction to cutouts. I never really saw them on anything execpt old hot rods before.
I kinda wanted to keep the stock exhaust and run it from the stock down pipe, but if it goes through the cat first I dont think that I will get any flame action. I don't think there is enough room to run it before the cat in the engine bay, unless I went strait down with it, but I would really like the cutout to exit after the front wheel.
I'm sure that it can be done at a custom shop but I am weary to do it without knowing of anyone's experiance wiht them on their 'Balts. I am really wondering if anyone had any experiance with them on their cars.
Thanks for the input so far!!

are you planning on going through a muffler? if not it will sound like complete ass... try disconnecting the downpipe and the exhaust, it's only 3 bolts... really doesn't sound good at all on these cars... gains, if any, would be very minimal too
No, I wasn't planning on using a muffler. Just a strait pipe out the side, or maybe a universal glass pack to quite things a bit. I can't imagine it would sound that bad, but I will take your word because I havent heard any with a strait pipe yet. I will go sound clip searching now
just disconnect those 3 bolts and start it up... you'll see.... again, it's just my opinion though, you may love it... but it's loud as hell, and raspy as **** on these cars...
mike, i think it's cobalt_kid is straightpiped, and his car sounds like a honda with a fartcan! haha...

SRT4 guys do it because turbo cars benefit greatly from a very free flowing exhaust system.
Ours wouldnt benefit in the same way....in fact ive heard that you can lose power by doing it on our cars.

Thanks for the input, I firgured the turbo in their cars gives adaquate backpressure and their wouldnt be enough without something like that in the way. Geusse I will end up buying a full exhaust...
