First Supercharged ShortRam!!!

Heya all, I believe I'm the first person to do this mod. One day I was thinking of what to do next to my car. Well I never wanted to spend lots of money on an intake and the stock one was doing fine. So I figured I'd count my pennies and do a Custom short ram intake.

The hardest part was relocating the radiator overflow hoses to the other side (currently fluid level sensor is unplugged) The stock hose clamp on the back of the engine was near impossible to get to with house mechanic tools, so I brought out the dremel. After taking off 3 parts of the hose clamp and barely any left to take off the hose finally came off. Running the new hoses was simple I just used 1/2 inch elbows with 1 1/2 inch nipples screwed into them (also after 4 hours of driving almost straight I lost a little more then a tablespoon full of coolant due to leaking around threads which is no biggie cause next week I'll go to parker and son and get real air hose connectors that will work much better).

After relocating the next step was getting all the bends and right lengths to get the filter right where the overflow was. after 5 trips to pep boys I finnaly came to the perfect fit, a 45degree with 1 inch cut off top and bottom, then another 45, then a 22degree bend about 3-4 inches long, and the filter used on the airbox mod . I did one thing wrong which was just before I bought the 22 I originally was going to go 45-22-45 so I cut the hole for the MAF sensor unfortunatly the 22 brought it to high, so when putting the 45 in middle the sensor is against the frame just behind the driver side headlight, no biggie again just annoying cause I wanted it easy access.

After it all said and done, took me about 3 days, planning, taking apart and putting together, could have been done in easily 3 hours now that I know what is needed. I hope you guys enjoy my little vids.

Ps the video sucks cause its with a camera not my video camera. The vid cam broke as I was heading out, so once I get it fixed you can really enjoy the sound.

Another 2 notes are the clicking is actually belt squeel, car was cold and I have problems lol. Last but not least after going to a meet with 12 cobalts ( you guys were great) I think everyone agreed it was VERY loud, it deafens you for a second

I'd further investigate the noises your car is making.

Your car sounds like there something is broken and i find that a total waist of energy, instead of keeping the stock CAI/B you made a warm air intake and had to relocate you coolant overflow? What a total and complete waiste of your time. Sure you tried something new but thats not even benifical. I hope you wise up and get a better set up.

Ok the sound is the belt squeel but you should get a idler arm or something with a 2.7" billet flow pulley.

I agree from the video even though he said its his belt slipping it does not sound like belt slipping. Its not squeeling its ticking/clicking.

Wow you guys are mean.
I like it man. If you get a ram air hood that blows right on the filter that will make it beter then a CAI.
I had my cavalier set up like that and in the winter I had to plug the hood or I had no heat. It would cool the motor that much!

I want to see a befor and after dyno of it after you get the bugs worked out.

Oh and some pics would bee cool to.
And like you said beter vids to.
Later

Dude I had a short-ram on my car 6 months ago. I have my blower, then throttle body, then coupler, the 90 degree elbow, then modified MAF/housing, then filter. Open element AEM filter. Like 10" of air travel from the blower.

Thanks for the good remarks now to correct you all on what you all said

CELs aren't a problem but 2 I've thrown is Maf performance and throttle, don't remember exact code numbers but they are both related to the huge ammount of air. Both problems fixed thanks to me owning HPtuners of course .

And throttle response I say I don't notice much, it's a torque heavy 4 banger, even if there was performance gained I wouldn't be able to know, but because of the amount of air I'm letting in (about 10-20% logged) and having the injectors run "about" the right AFR I'm sure I gained a good amount of power.

The noises you hear ARE belt slip. On start up it's high pitched no stutter, but once belt warms up it grabs more and more till it stops. I vid taped only 5 minutes after startup so the belt slip was worse then what I wanted but it was also cold out so I didn't feel like waiting.

Heat soak?? lol are you joking... This is Intercooled. Intake temps stock 110 idle 80 driving with intake it's now 120-125 idle warm day - 60-70 driving warm day if you doubt me it's cool, but I have nothing to prove .

Did I hit my door? I didn't see anything, but dents psh I'm not worried if you saw them you'd understand. First week I had it I got 2 major dents on inner corner due to my mom and sister taking it out, and got a cart in driver side door cause a suv decided to not move a kart and wedge it into my door and on other side someone opened their door so it dented just to the right of the door handle...

Yea stock hood, Only hood I'd ever buy is a evo style hood, but there are 3 styles so I can't say which evo hood. and they don't make them for our cars, maybe I'll try molding the vents in the middle and sides and put working mesh so it'll be a extractor hood.

Belt squeal will be solved tomorrow stage 2 belt will be in.. I shouldn't need it I have the larger idler, and 2 others have SAME setup with no squeal and I didn't either till a month and a half ago, I think the "annodized" pulley paint came off, shouldn't come off since it SHOULD be in the metal but mine peeled off so I'm also going to talk to billetflow.

I never had problems with water getting into the the intake even driving through puddles.

Me bouncing off the rev limiter is just me trying to show how loud it gets (this was before I knew the camera blows) Next time I'll set rev limiter to 9k and try again k .

Why would you cut the hood lol, your best bet is at the track take out the headlight and run the filter right there.

And someone already stated this about having the ram air 6 months ago... I meant First Cobalt SS Supercharged.

And for the Bigger IC reseviour, later on once spring comes around I'll be putting in a tiny brake reseviour in the corner of engine bay and using that as a windsheild washer fluid reseviour and taking the old one our and put in a dual reseviour, I found in a controu I think it was, its much bigger then ours but is seperated in middle for 2 different reseviours, so one will be IC and other Radiator overflow. The only purpose of this will be so I can put ice in.

Sorry for being so long just wanted to correct you all, and if I can't get a good vid soon I'll show you how I know it's belt squeal, I vid tape me spraying belt condtioner and show that it does infact go away

Thanks for taking interest, and sorry being late I'm in New Jersey working in Paramus and I just got a chance to get on the laptop on hotel internet
