Ford Guy here....need help with a Cobalt SS
Hey Guys...
I need some help here. I don't know the first thing about these cars so hopefully you dudes can help me out...
I have a good friend that bought a brand new Cobalt SS back in 2006. I drove it around a few times and I am impressed.
I am trying to get him to have some fun with this car. This car is BONE STOCK...he has done zero with this car. So what can we do to get this car to go faster?
Obviously a smaller pulley would do wonders BUT how much power can this motor take? Help me out guys! I gotta convince him to have some fun with this car.
Any info you can give me would be excellent.
Thanks!

motor can hold up real well prolly 300whp.
but he should go with 60lbs injectors, 2.8" pulley, NGK Spark Plugs, injen cai, header-back exhaust, front mount heat exchanger, and tune. would be just a start for a little fun and about 260whp compared to the stock 205whp.
and all would cost him about $1,500

So the motor can hold up to around 300. What kind of numbers can that pull?? What can these cars run stock??
Sorry for all the questions guys. That's how you learn though
Can I put a smaller pulley on his blower or is it going to make his PCM go nuts?

60s is a very common injectors for ppl to run on the car. and dropping the pulley without tuning is dueable but unsafe.
stock they are like a mid 14 car and with the mods i said along with meth and dr's they have gone 12.75

Good deal...now I gotta get him to slowly do this haha...
What are the first few mods you recommend to start off with?

There's a guy (paul) that made like 414whp with a stock motor so they're pretty strong. The M62 supercharger is what holds back most people power wise, unless you upgrade to a bigger one or turbo it. Heavily modded M62s are right below or around 300whp but he can do much less mods safer. The mods that drew said are pretty good. I would just recommend to make sure he gets a good tune and it should be pretty reliable.

I'd say:
Intake
Longtube Header
Highflo Cat/downpipe
3” exhaust
60lb injectors
2.8” pulley
Colder Plugs
Cooling Mods (front mount heat exchanger, Dual Pass Endplate, Meth injection)
And a good dynotune to wrap it all up.
Probably good for 280whp (depending on the tune). Am I missing anything? Like stated before the OTTP Stage I kit is awesome. You just have to get the I/H/E part...

Not only that, isnt that adding your fabled 11% dyno jet would read but I dyno on a mustang? Unless you dyno on a dyno jet or any dyno for that matter that gives you those numbers, post the real stuff. If you have since done that since the last time than I apologize for my error.

Pretty much the standard go to mod's with these cars are 2.8 in pully 60# injectors and a tune. You can get a kit like the OTTP stage one which has everything including the tune included. But, as you know a custom tune will be better.
Also a nice cheap mod is the "airbox mod" It consists of takeing of the stock filter and the bottom of the airbox and replacing it with a cone filter. You need to replace it with a filter that has a hose clamp to hold it on because the bottom of the airbox holds the stock filter in.
So for about 500$ you can see a gain of 30-45 hp with a setup like that.
