FRAM VS OEM Oil Filters

Just thought i would post the differences. I have noticed that the ticking i have on a cold start has greatly diminished since switching back to the OEM filter. I've always ran FRAM filters in the past but after reading some of the post's here i switched , glad i did. I was really surprised at how different they are .

In the past few years Fram has been making some pretty bad filters. There quality has definetly droped.

I have used them alot as well in the past. Untill about 03 or 04 when my car at the time. A brand new tiburon gt v6 did just as you described. It ticked on cold start up untill it was partially warmed up. I didn't beleive the dealer when they said it was due to the aftermarket oil filter. So, i gave it a try. Figured, what did i have to loose? A couple of dollars. And sure enogh. The noise went away and never came back. They said it was due to Fram making bad quality filters and some sort of valve in the filter allowing all the oil to drain out of the filter when the car was off. So everytime i started it . It had to repressurize the oil filter first. Just like when you change oil. Or so they told me.

Exactly what i read . If you look at how different the prong and o-ring design is on the fram vs OEM , i can see why it might happen. I was amazed when my cold start ticking was almost completely gone, it does it for 5 seconds where it used to be almost 30 seconds.

Granted that is a used oil filter as opposed to a new one that you are comparing. If you have an Advanced Auto they have a cartridge filter from K&N that fits our rides now. Good luck.

as cheap as the oe filters are, why would you use anything else? (except hengst of course, who makes these for GM and also makes the filter housing)

I always used Fram filters until I had one literally fall apart on me. The thing cracked almost in half. Ever since that, I just use OEM filters.

AC Delco, Wix, K&N, AMS Oil, Mobil One. Those are my favorite oil filters. I'd stick with K&N or AMS Oil if they weren't so damn expensive.

I'm comparing the dimensions of the filter itself , and how different the plastic molding is .

Sure. Pure ONE, just like the high end K&N or M1 filters, are guarenteed to last longer (more mileage) between oil changes. And since I use Royal Purple motor oil, I don't mind going 6-8k miles between oil changes

fram filters suck, i wouldn't put them on a gokart.

stp has a better filter at autozone, and it comes with the cap gasket @ lower price than the fram. i would suggest looking on the inside of the filter too and check out the difference in the stp and fram design on the inner walls

Why switch from Factory filters? Aftermarkets don't create the filter for that engine specifically you are putting it on. so flow rate isn't counted for same as the bypass valve. You are running a risk or killing your engine because of a cheap aftermarket filter. Stock ones only cost like 3.75, we have already seen engines that have been starved of oil because people want to use other filters, ohhh and aftermarket filters also have leak issues at the seal.

I will never put a fram filter on a car I care about. My buddy had a 200SX in which the Fram filter he put on sucked itself together, literally the metal collapsed and sucked it self together. It cut off all oil flow and POP went the motor.

If I change the oil on a vehicle it gets a Purolator Pure One, I don't mess with the other crap. If it goes to the dealer, it gets OEM.

There is a Purolator factory down the road from me and my auto tech class went there on a field trip and all filters(aside from fram and some other aftermarket ones) are the exact same, they had different lines for the different ones, one was a mopar line, one was acdelco, one was ford, one was napa... It was kinda crazy.
