Fuel Tank Not Empty?

Does this happen to anyone else.. According to the fuel gauge needle, I go all the way to resting on the red mark. You know, "fuel level low," usually means you have about 20-30 miles left in the tank. Well I use up the whole dad-gum thing, and I have never ever never put more than like 10.5 gallons of fuel in my car in a single fill-up. And that is at several different pumps/stations. And out of every tank I get at least 300+ miles. This is a 13.5 gallon tank, I know that much. So... something is screwed up, but I don't know where.

idk how your not putting that much in. when i have about 1/8th left, i fill up and usually its 11 gallons or sometimes very high in the 10's

regardless, theres always a gallon or so that wont show up on the gauge. It helps prevent people from running dry and getting stuck

Jkunzy1690 02-05-2009 09:18 AM

my car does that too....there is actually s tsb but not for us. for cobalts that run out of gas before they reach the low fuel light. idn whatever its not a big deal- atleast our fuel pump likes us!

Frew 02-05-2009 11:11 AM

same thing happens to me 10.5 gallons everytime, goes about 280 miles

rallycobalt06 02-05-2009 11:23 AM

damn... you guys are getting good mpg  usually when i fill up the average is between 10.5-11 gallons. but my miles per tank is averaging between 250-260 miles.... stupid city driving :cussing:

Red07SSNA 02-05-2009 11:27 AM

I'm sure there is a built-in reserve...you really don't want your fuel pump to be spinning with no fuel in the tank...

K-Train04RL 02-05-2009 05:26 PM

how about this, when the tank is on red, fill it up. easy enough, now you wont get stuck.

fmxr47 02-06-2009 12:43 PM

yeah, i never have seen more than 10.7 go in my tank, and thats with me topping it off lol

Rambotk3 02-06-2009 01:18 PM

I just went through this earlier this morning! I went 280 then the low fuel warning turned on then i drove 18 miles before filling up, 11 gallons topped it off completely! from what i understood, our cars have a 2 gallon reserve, so that is why we only top off with 11 or so gallons. Some correct me if I am wrong!

ShortStack 02-06-2009 01:20 PM

Yea most cars keep a reserve.. my old mazda had 1 gallon reserve..

rnjmur 02-06-2009 01:27 PM

The low fuel warning come on when you drop to 50 miles to empty. During the winter when I average about 24 MPG This usually means I have a little over 2 gallons left in the tank. The cobalt tank is 49 Liters which equals about 13 gallons.

Hockeyman 02-06-2009 04:54 PM

I usually have around 3 gallons left when the light comes on.

Zach06CobaltSC 02-06-2009 04:59 PM

rnjmur - you should think about switching your tune out away from the stage 2. You will see better gas mileage in general.

eurochevy 03-26-2009 03:40 PM

k is there a light that physically pops on when we're SUPER low on fuel or is it just the "low fuel" on the dic?

HunterKiller89 03-27-2009 05:53 AM

prolly just the DIC. Why?

Johnboy12358 03-27-2009 10:58 AM

most I ever get in there is 11 at the pump. thats if the low fuel light has been on for too long... I think they low fuel comes on with 2-2.5 gallons left, which is OK with me. Rather have more in there than I think I do

leviticus88 03-27-2009 04:41 PM

I like the idea of a reserve, between 1.5 and 2 gallons.

Why does my 2007 Silverado always run out of gas? The light comes on and I have about 5 miles or so to get gas or it's walking for me! Sometimes I just don't think about it and next thing I know, I'm walking with a gas can in my hand...
