Full Synthetic Only!

I forgot to mention when i went to pick up my car, i was talking the the service manager and after he was finished telling me about the timing chain tensioner, he asked me what kind of oil was in there. I told him 6 quarts of non-synthetic 5w-30 and he told me that my ENTIRE warranty for the whole car could bem voided if i put non synthetic oil in there and he kept stressing that i should be using Mobil 1. He told me to go immediately put full mobil 1 synthetic in there. Just wanted to know what you guys think of the entire warranty being voided for not using synthetic. LOL

I would only put that in my engine regardless...what 10 bucks more on the 5-quart? 30 compared to 20? plus, i like the bottle : )

Probably not the entire warranty, just the engine part. I would spend the extra money for the synthetic, a lot cheaper than $5k crate engine.

shiiiit if this LSJ costs 5 grand...i saw that the friggen...ls2 costs a little over 5 grand...or was it 7 grand...still, lsj NOT worth 5 grand, shiiit. still, dont hurt your engine.

If you do indeed have a ss/sc your warranty should be void and you they should have not given your car back to you. There is a mobil 1 oil cap for a reason.

This is total BS. You can put any oil in any engine so long as its API certified. Your warranty cannot be voided.

Why you would put non synthetic in is another matter.

There are only about 3 oil's you can use without your warranty being voided. Someone on out forums had a list of them, i remember it was mobil 1, some exxon oil and 1 other one

BS, as long as it has the correct star cert on the bottle it's good for the warrenty. I run a semi-blend phillips 66 troparctic. Great oil.

Out of my owners manual: (on the S/C SS) The engine requires a special oil that meets GM standard GM4718M.

..."not all synthetic API oils with the starburst symbol will meet this GM standard"

So, it says nothing about using normal oil. Just that it has to meet GM4718M standrad. And I bet there are more then 3 engine oils that meet it.

MacG321--what oil was put in your car?

That would make it way easier then searching out all engine oils on the Net and checking.
I sent Redline oil an e-mail asking.

not directing this to you but in general

i hate when people buy a performance car, then skimp on the gas and oil changes "well gm said any gas octane will work, so might as well put 87 in and save a few cents" HELLLOOOOOO your buying a performance car, might as well give it the best u can possibly give it to give it the best PERFORMANCE

Well I guess you’ll get what you pay for in the end… hope your engine holds up. Oh and yes your warranty is void (only on your engine) not the entire car. Read this

Oh and take a look at your warranty that you got with the car from GM.

You might want to change to synthetic and or take your car to a different dealership for service or both. Chances are that service department will not do any engine work for you.

Ok guys look at it this way. Put mobile 1 in your engine and drive around for a 1000 miles, and then take a small sample of that in a clear bottle. Then put regular oil in your car and drive around for 1000 miles and take a sample of that. Do you think youll be able to tell any difference between the two??

if somethgin goes wrogn with the engine then ur fcuked man.... jsut stick with mobil 1... it even says it on the oil cap!

you wonder why people have problems.....if they told you it needed reg dino oil you would probably put synth in it

The engine is a HP 2.0L S/C and you are taking the risk that your $29.99 oil change is fine compared to a 39.99 synth fill ?

I'm sure the reg cobalt was right next to the SS S/C on the dealer's lot....sounds like you picked the wrong one..

I am keeping the recipt of every 6qts of syn oil I use per oil change and logging it into a book.

You must use a synthetic that meets the GM4718M standard in the LSJ or the warranty on your engine is history.

I do like Mercury does. Save the receipts and enter each oil change into a log with date and odometer reading.

I called the GM warrenty department on this last week to ask this vary thing. (Geting my first oil change soon) I was told that the 2.0 S/C must have full synthetic or the warranty is void. It is in the warranty you got with the car. Read it!

I'd like someone to scan where it says must be synthetic.

And why would using dino oil suddenly destroy an engine using synthetic??

I mean say your car comes with dino oil--(they have been using that forever) and you switch to synthetic. You can switch back.

I am not anti synthetic BTW--I will be swithcing to synthetic soon. I am goona e-mail my contact at GM to see what he says.

.....further more , if you do take a SS or Redline in with engine damage for warranty work , the oil will be sent out to be analyzed if theres any question about it .

I have no qualms at all about using Mobil 1 . If you saw how new my 124,000 mile LT1 shortblock looked after disassembly I think you would be amazed , it had mobil 1 all its life and that engine led a VERY hard life , hehe At the advice of alot of engine builders when I built my last LT1 and with my current LS1 I have switched to Amsoil . If it meets GM's standard , Im sure it will proably exceed it , then the crankcase in my SS will get filled with Amsoil too . Its a bit more $$$ than Mobil though .

To my knowledge the 2.4 isnt requiring it and didnt come factory filled with it . The 2.0 engine on the other hand does though . And there is specific guidlines for it my warranty papers . I would scan mine , but my scanner has not worked since switched to XP proffessional ....Umax is snobbishly making me buy update drivers

^^ Yep thats what I said. Its in the warranty you get with the car. Why not use it any way? Its way beter.
Oh and one of the resons I was told it had to be used was that the computer thing that tells you when your oil needs changing is calobrated for it. And as synthetic last longer then reguler crap oil it would be telling you your oil is still good long after it had gone to crap.
Make any sens? It did to me.
