Houston! We have a problem!

So I began accelerating down a road today when the car suddenly died (car was in first gear when this happened).

Would not restart after several attempts. As I was about to go looking for a pay phone to call for a tow truck I gave it one last try ... and it started!

Car seems to be running normally now, but the check engine light is on.

Will be going to dealer in the a.m. (I only have 1500 miles on my car!)

I'll keep you posted ...

i got my money on the crank position sensor acting up. It happened to me when i had 900 miles on the car and has happened to countless other guys here.

I didnt have to replace the part since it hasn't happened since that one time. i just hit 24000 miles and my only issue is my flex joint in my down pipe let go.

Just dropped off my car. Check engine light was no longer on (it stayed on all thru last night?).

They said they'll let me know by later this afternoon what they found.

I told them about this forum's articles pertaining to the crankshaft position sensor. Service Manager they've had no such issues with that particular problem on Cobalts. LOL

Also, I asked them if they ever did a Stage 2 install. He said yes, a number of times. He thinks the going rate was about 2 1/2 hours for labor. At 80+ dollars an hour, that figures out to a little over $200.

That's reasonable. Too bad I've already spent over $750 in vet bills the past 2 weeks (I adopted a new stray kitten that showed up on the front steps of the firehouse - neutering, shots, pills, etc.).

Oh well, looks like St. 2 is gonna have to wait till later this year.

Will keep 'ya posted on what the dealer found.

Lata ...

Even though the light is off the code will still be stored as a history code.

Being of unknown medical history, I would not allow him into my house with my other cat until he was fully checked out.

So he got the full treatment:
  • Distemper Shot
  • Flea Drops
  • De-worming pills
  • Neutered
  • Antibiotics
  • Full Blood Chemistry Test
  • Feline Aids Test
  • Feline Leukemia Test

Happy to say, his test results were negative on all the important stuff! I've named him Jude. and the vet says he is about 4-5 months old and weighs 5lbs.

Ain't he cute!

Sleepy time n the sink!

Sending my other cat Clare "up a tree"!

Stage 2 can wait. He couldn't ...

a little advice from what i found out at the dealership (well my dealer anyways). i went in for a valve gasket cover leak, and told them that was the problem after reading articles on this site and having a mechanic i know look at. my point is i told the service writer what the problem was and he didnt believe me...WTF. A$$holes i swear. but for future reference just tell them what happen and let them figure it out if still under warrenty. some of those guys just dont believe other people might know more about cars then them. just my two cents

The service writers do NOT want to hear customers opinions on what the fix might be for the problem other than a quick overall "this is what happened". Ive taken cars in with a definate I know what it is for warranty work and ive been literally told to shut up and sign here.

^^^Don't worry peeps.

Being 47 years old, I've known for a long time now how to properly behave with Dealers (and with people in general).

That's what comes with life experiences.

Proof of that is that we were all laughing about different stuff this morning when I dropped off my car, and ... they gave me a free loaner car to boot!

UPDATE:
They just called and told me it was the crankshaft sensor. But they won't get the part in until Monday.

Oh well, a couple of more days ...

I'm surprised no one else commented on this part of the post. Are you one of those ultra rare cell phoneless individuals? I was just going to be a smart ass and ask "what's a pay phone?" but I did not. And yes, I am old enough to remember a time before cell phones.

HA HA HA! Good catch!

(and thanks for the positive comments on my cats all!)

But you are correct sir, I do not have/use/own:
  • Cell Phone
  • Pager
  • Fax Machine
  • Cable T.V.

I have cable for the internet (I'm a gamer!) and use "rabbit ears" for my T.V., but I mess around with computers to the point where people often ask me for assistance with their problems.

But that's about it for me and "technology."

LOL

A couple of days in the shop for a $20 part is not worth spending an extra $4,000 for a vehicle with the same performance.

Ms3 = extra $$ thrown out the window

BTW, you make quite the comment seeing how you are a brand new member here who only has just 25 posts.

This is a Cobalt forum ... so chill dude.

Hiya Rokon!

Yeah, I even joked around with the guy at the Service desk saying that the forum article about the crankshaft sensor specifically said to NOT act cocky when telling them about what we reas on the forum.

LOL

We all laughed! (the service guy is cool, he owns a 'Vette )

As far as the St. 2 goes, all those recent Vet bills set me back a bit. Oh well, I only have 1400 miles on the car anyway, maybe by the time I get the upgrade the price will have come down a bit!

(looking at the glass 1/2 full )

sorry... lol thread jack
Thank you WRC, but I had already thoroughly researched the different prices/models of the Ms3 long before I had walked into the Mazda dealer (I'm very thorough about such things).

So here's the problem then: In real world buying, the SS/SC cost me WAY less than a Ms3.

Way less.

And here is the actual break down on how I saved a ton of $$ over the the price of an Ms3 Sport:
  • SS/SC sticker was $21,600 vs. the $22,900 on the Ms3 Sport
    $1,300 Savings
  • Since the Ms3 is in apparent short supply, the Mazda dealer was not willing to dicker one red cent on my trade. The Chevy dealer gave $2,000 more for my trade than did the Mazda guy (12k vs. 10k).
    $2,000 savings
  • There were no rebates on the Ms3. On the SS/SC, I bagged $2,500 in rebates ($1,000 basic rebate, $500 non-Chevy trade in rebate, additional $1,000 Memorial Day week only rebate)
    $2,500 Savings
  • TOTAL SAVINGS:
    $5,800

WOW!

I thought that it was only 4k in savings, but you made me realize that I actually saved almost $6,000.

Thanks!

np, but.. mind you its the same type idea as srt4 vs cobalt. yes you have power on demand with the s/c but nothing can compare to a t/c

just from experience and self opinion (usually forums are opinionated) and i feel a turbo has better potential

That and it also depends on where the mazda was made, many of the good cars ive seen coming up from the ford plant dont hold up to the Japanese made ones lol

Could you find a difference when you test drove them?!

Well, I had previously owned an '04 SRT-4 (for a year and a half).

So I guess I know what it's like to drive a turbocharged car!

As far as a turbo'd car's "potential", I wasn't really interested in that kind of stuff (my SRT-4 remained stock the entire time I had owned it).

What I go by when purchasing a pocket rocket is:
  • it must have a much better power to weight ration than your average street car
  • it must look really good
  • it must be cost efficient

So for me, the SRT-4 and the SS/SC were the only cars that fit the bill.

As far as how the Ms3 drove, the dealer didn't even have a Sport model for me to drive (I was told "one was on the way") but I did get to drive the more expensive GT for about 5-10 min.

It drove VERY well, don't get me wrong. I am not knocking Ms3's in general.

But for me the question remained: "Does it drive that much better that I can justify paying almost $6,000 more for it than an SS/SC."

Well, I guess you already know the answer to that one!

I prefer the quote "A penny saved is a penny earned." Especially if that penny earned was for virtually the same product.

That being the case, I've saved 580,000 pennies on a car with almost identical performance to that of an Ms3.

That's a hell of a lot of change my friend!

Besides WRC, if you go by the notion that "you get what you pay for", then anyone in the world who does not own the fastest production car in the world, the 1 million dollar+ Bugatti Veryon - then those people have gotten short-changed.

That would include those who own Ferraris, Lambos, and ....

Subaru's.

Yes, Subaru's.

Do you see now why that theory can not hold true?

he he
