Hurst shifter wobble
Hurst shifter wobble
Hey guys, anyway to fix the Hurst shifter wobble. You know, the way it can kind of rotate left and right. I remember seeing something about retapping the small set screw and putting in a larger one. Can anybody point me to that?
ok...i had this issue...one way is to take it all apart, and drill where the set screw goes down...giving it a better place to bite. I did that, but eventually it wore out too (i dont think they used the right kind of steel on some of these, but thats my opinion). So then i put a little...and i mean LITTLE, dab of JB weld in the pit i drilled...no problems since!
Thanks Drak, I don't mind a use JB weld response when there's a bit of elaboration. But if I answered someone's thread with a random "use JB weld" or "just glue it back together" people would look at me like I'm being snide.
I think I'll drill down and then use a bigger set screw.

Yeah, I used JB weld also. It works like a charm.......

hopefully that holds out for you! ...like i said, i did that too...thinking it would work...it didnt...i swear the steel they used for some of these things is softer than the rest. cheapest bidder i suppose...
thank you.....and sorry if i sounded snide didn't mean it that way

Ok, just fixed the shifter. I just went to Home Depot, got a drill and tap for 1/4" - 20NC. Irwin has a pack with a drill bit is 13/64". I bought a 1/4" x 1/2" 2 pack of set screws for all of 70 cents. Whole trip cost about 13 bucks for tap handle, bit, and 2 pack of screws, I bought one for 1/4" x 3/4" just in case. Disassembled shifter. Left the ball on the bottom with the set screw goes and I left the retainer clip on. I adjusted the shifter and ball into appropriate position. Then I just drilled straight through the ball where the threads for the set screw is at. Stopped every now and again to clean off shavings and used a toothpick to gauge how deep I was going. When I got just a bit deeper then the 1/2" set screw I stopped and tapped it. I went in and out twice with the tap. Whole operation to drill took maybe 1-2 minutes, does not take long to drill. Cleaned off the shavings then screwed in the tap screw until it was a bit pass flush. Reassembled and no more wobble!
If any confusion exists, I drilled into the hole where the set screw goes and then right into the shifter itself. Then when I tapped it, I tapped around 1/4" into the shifter.

im a machinist, and let me tell ya...if you tap something crooked, you had better just throw it away or be prepared to make a much bigger hole!
I just left the ball on the shifter. That way the hole lines up properly when the drill bit bites into the shifter shaft. You gum up the threads with the drill bit, but you have to retap anyway. It lines itself up.
When I say ball, I mean the pivot ball and not the shifter ball.

Sorry, it's pretty easy.
Like I said, just set your shifter assembly exactly where you want it. Drill into the existing hole where the set screw currently screw in and into the shifter itself. I drilled deep enough so that I could get a few threads into it. It would probably be good to put some loctite in there too. I'm not sure if other tools or sizes will work but I used exactly what I listed there from Home Depot and mine is working fine still. Solid as a rock. If i can figure out how to make 5th easier to find, I'll be gravy.
