intercooler pump, aftermarket options

well my intercooler pump is on its way out, i have to hit it with a hammer every so often to get it to work. i called the dealer and they quoted me $425 with my shop discount, i almost crapped myself. not really wanting to go with a used one (no ss/sc or redline ion in the junkyards near me anyways), but there has to be a cheaper alternative. i know some people "upgrade" to the mustang cobra/ lightning pump, but ive heard mixed things about it being the same bosche pump.

anyone know of anything aftermarket???

BLAZIN07SS 10-21-2008 10:05 PM

Over The Top Performance has an upgraded pump in the works i believe. dont know when its gonna be released though

ItalianJoe1 10-21-2008 10:08 PM

Meziere makes a pump that could be used, but it runs about $250 for the pump and fittings, and it might require re-running the hoses to it, and will definately need some wiring work. Its what I'm gonna do when mine craps out next.

Ebay man. Search "Ford Lightning intercooler pump". They are about $89.99 + $10 shipping, brand new. Just did mine and it works and hooks up the same as the stock pump.

Yep, and its alot cheaper than the $425 he was quoted from his dealer!

shadowfaxss 10-21-2008 10:52 PM

GM Parts Direct has it listed for $296.35....Regular price is $499.00

quadracer0387 10-21-2008 11:08 PM

over the top has them... just ordered mine. talk to fast98 if you are looking. they are not on his site yet but he can get them.

theneelster 10-21-2008 11:11 PM

You could do a generic bosch 12v pump or there are some pumps by a company called jabsco that have similar if not better output than the bosch one that you can find somewhat cheaper on ebay; I believe they are called "water puppy" pumps.

Sharkey 10-22-2008 12:00 AM

gmpartsdirect.com wont sell to people with a canadain billing address (tried in the past. this is so gm can get away with raping us here in canada.

ill pm fast98 i guess, unless he chimes in here with more info

ralliartist 10-22-2008 12:55 AM

jesus man, just get a lightning/cobra pump off of ebay. It's the same fucking thing.

Sharkey 10-22-2008 01:13 AM

if i dont find a sutable upgrade i will end up with a lighting pump. anytime something needs replacing i look to upgrade if possible, its just to inviting.

ralliartist 10-22-2008 01:31 AM

If you want better cooling, PM me and I'll give you some advice. A faster flowing pump isn't the answer.

HunterKiller89 10-22-2008 03:11 AM

^^ i want one!! why do i have to be broke!! (i want both of what your 'mentioning' btw...you should give me a christmas present...lol)

Darkmanx 10-22-2008 03:25 AM

just type in intercooler pump in ebay and 99.9 percent of the ones that pop up will be the the one you need for 89 bucks i just order and swaped mine out last week.

Sythen1678 10-22-2008 03:51 AM

I just replaced mine with the stock pump, and when i took apart the old one there was a lot of dust particles enough to fill up the bottom of a glass about a 1/4 inch. It spun much more freely but im sure it was still jacked.

LopsidedJester 10-22-2008 01:36 PM

Jabsco makes a Low Pressure Cyclone pump which works well, a bit bigger and needs alternative mounting, but flows almost 3 times as well as the standard bosch and its about $200 to buy.

i was doing some reading on some of the ford forum and the meziere pump is a common upgrade for the cobra/lightning guys. aparently they are much more reliable (one guy had his on for 5 years with no issues) and they are rebuildable. this is whats most important to me, reliability. i really dont want to have to be changing the pump every couple of years. sure they are fairly cheap on e-bay (about $150 canadian by the time i get it in my hand), but if i replace that twice ive more than paid for an aftermarket reliable solution.

basicly what im after is to find out how much is too much. the stock pump is 6-8gpm, the meziere is 20gpm at 12 volt. now aparently 20gpm isnt too much flow for the ford setup, however iirc they use a core instead of laminova. another thing i found was a guy with a vortech charged silverado with air/water intercooler using a meziere pump with a resistor to drop running voltage to 12 volts and saw the best performance that way, so that is an option aswell.

im not really looking at this for performance, keep that in mind. however, from one of the intercooler/manifold threads it was stated that the manufacturor of the laminova says minimum flow for one core should be 10gpm, so in theory it should make our setup a little more efficient, however hard to say unless its tried.

Check out a ford dealership. The same part is used on the mustang cobra's and they have it for less than half of what gm does....It is the same exact pump...just doesn't say "GM" on it.

Sharkey 10-31-2008 01:41 AM

i already know that. my ford dealer still wants $240 with my shop discount. as i said, not really looking for an oem replacment that ill have to spend more money changing again in 2 years

G85 SS 10-31-2008 01:44 AM

damn, 240......

Down here it was ~140

{edit} Didn't realize you were in Canada....that Canadian or US currency?? Either way still expensive.

Sharkey 10-31-2008 01:54 AM

thats canadian. it kinda sucks right now being our dollar dropped way down. but even when it was close to the same stuff is way more up here and its just unexplainable as to why. i was trying to order a gauge bezel from gmpartsdirect.com because it was 1/3 the price of my local dealerships, however they wont bill or ship anything to a canadian address.

G85 SS 10-31-2008 01:59 AM

Dumb....It's not like there's a massive ocean to cross or anything. And if you get something shipped they kill you in shipping fees.....Check with ralliartist though. I bet he's got something better than the stock pump.

Sharkey 10-31-2008 02:12 AM

just got a bill from fedex today for my clear image stainless header, cost me almost $100 in border charges.

ralliartist said earlier in this thread that i wouldnt benifit from a different pump and to buy a stock one.

G85 SS 10-31-2008 02:15 AM

He was referring to a pump that just pushes more coolant. Which doesn't really do anything other than move more coolant.....send him a PM and see what he says. He's probably got something that will help you out for cooling purposes if that's what you're looking for.....which reminds me to ask him something...lol
