intercooler pump, aftermarket options

intercooler pump, aftermarket options
well my intercooler pump is on its way out, i have to hit it with a hammer every so often to get it to work. i called the dealer and they quoted me $425 with my shop discount, i almost crapped myself. not really wanting to go with a used one (no ss/sc or redline ion in the junkyards near me anyways), but there has to be a cheaper alternative. i know some people "upgrade" to the mustang cobra/ lightning pump, but ive heard mixed things about it being the same bosche pump.
anyone know of anything aftermarket???

Ebay man. Search "Ford Lightning intercooler pump". They are about $89.99 + $10 shipping, brand new. Just did mine and it works and hooks up the same as the stock pump.

You could do a generic bosch 12v pump or there are some pumps by a company called jabsco that have similar if not better output than the bosch one that you can find somewhat cheaper on ebay; I believe they are called "water puppy" pumps.

just type in intercooler pump in ebay and 99.9 percent of the ones that pop up will be the the one you need for 89 bucks i just order and swaped mine out last week.

I just replaced mine with the stock pump, and when i took apart the old one there was a lot of dust particles enough to fill up the bottom of a glass about a 1/4 inch. It spun much more freely but im sure it was still jacked.

Jabsco makes a Low Pressure Cyclone pump which works well, a bit bigger and needs alternative mounting, but flows almost 3 times as well as the standard bosch and its about $200 to buy.

i was doing some reading on some of the ford forum and the meziere pump is a common upgrade for the cobra/lightning guys. aparently they are much more reliable (one guy had his on for 5 years with no issues) and they are rebuildable. this is whats most important to me, reliability. i really dont want to have to be changing the pump every couple of years. sure they are fairly cheap on e-bay (about $150 canadian by the time i get it in my hand), but if i replace that twice ive more than paid for an aftermarket reliable solution.
basicly what im after is to find out how much is too much. the stock pump is 6-8gpm, the meziere is 20gpm at 12 volt. now aparently 20gpm isnt too much flow for the ford setup, however iirc they use a core instead of laminova. another thing i found was a guy with a vortech charged silverado with air/water intercooler using a meziere pump with a resistor to drop running voltage to 12 volts and saw the best performance that way, so that is an option aswell.
im not really looking at this for performance, keep that in mind. however, from one of the intercooler/manifold threads it was stated that the manufacturor of the laminova says minimum flow for one core should be 10gpm, so in theory it should make our setup a little more efficient, however hard to say unless its tried.

Check out a ford dealership. The same part is used on the mustang cobra's and they have it for less than half of what gm does....It is the same exact pump...just doesn't say "GM" on it.

thats canadian. it kinda sucks right now being our dollar dropped way down. but even when it was close to the same stuff is way more up here and its just unexplainable as to why. i was trying to order a gauge bezel from gmpartsdirect.com because it was 1/3 the price of my local dealerships, however they wont bill or ship anything to a canadian address.

Dumb....It's not like there's a massive ocean to cross or anything. And if you get something shipped they kill you in shipping fees.....Check with ralliartist though. I bet he's got something better than the stock pump.

He was referring to a pump that just pushes more coolant. Which doesn't really do anything other than move more coolant.....send him a PM and see what he says. He's probably got something that will help you out for cooling purposes if that's what you're looking for.....which reminds me to ask him something...lol
