K&N filters and Magnaflow muffler, surprising (disappointing ?) dyno results.

A performance shop I know got some testing on 2 Cobalt SS/SC (including mine today).

The dyno numbers are low, since it's a Mustang dyno. But the most important is that they are constants. All test in 4th gear.

1: Stock average is 192 WHP.
2: Stock + Magnaflow 2,5" rear muffler average is 200 to 202 WHP.
3 : Stock + Magnaflow 2,5" + K&N filter average is 192 WHP. ***

The Magnaflow show an average of 8 to 10 WHP GAIN.

I repeat: Test have been made on BOTH cars and show exactly the same results !

*** ADDED : About the K&N high flow filter itself, gains are not easy to measure with the by-pass valve selenoid bleeding some boost. ***

My advice is to never trust a butt dyno. I know the supercharger sound is better with the airbox cover removed, but dyno shows it is running richer.

Next week I'll install a 3" pulley and will dyno it too.

Have a nice day !

Is there a chance that resetting the comp and driving it for awhile would lean it out a bit and maybe regain (if not improve) the lost hp?

What happens when we get the K&N Typoon intake they say a 8-10hp gain? So mabe the e-1009 filter is too big or too much turbulance for the SS/SC?

I have been saying that since I seen the E-1009 filter.

It is to big for the air box and air is only able to enter one side. Our airboxes were manufactured by Donaldson industries. They knew what they were doing I think the oly high flow filter to get is one that is a direct fit.

We dyno tested the E1009 filter and gained just about 2-3 hp across the board.

Theres the dyno chart to prove it. Take a look at the graph line - youll see its consistent across the board.

A normal sized drop in would still be a better choice.

Hey man look at my previous posts, I am not used to post some BS ! The K&N filter that we removed is in my car's trunk right now, and there is no way i will get some advantage to post some BS on this (or other forums !).

We kept the filter, maybe to reinstall it later, if we can successfully install the Apexi S-AFC II, or whatever other piggyback, to tune it better.

Another thing, since I've got no camera and no scanner, I can't post proof (for now) of what I am saying.

So if you don't trust these informations, just don't say these are BS !

About your filter, have you dynoed it ?

Also, since I think you got your stock filter removed, you should be able to measure all the dimensions and compare to the K&N filter that I used, and you will be able to see that most of the dimensions (if not all) are the same !!!

About the last paragraph on my first post of this very thread, the dyno loss wasn't cause by the MAF ... I am pretty damn sure it was caused by the by-pass valve selenoid.
