Knocking/Fluttering.

Today I realized that while decelerating my car makes a rotational knocking or fluttering type noise. It makes this noise in and out of gear but it is louder while in gear. It does not make the noise at idle, only while the car is moving. Any idea of what this might be?

I really hope it's not the transmission as for the sound let me see if I can get a decent recording of the sound. I don't seem to feel any extra slipping of the clutch. Did you have that issue when you ran into your problem. If I had to explain the sound I would say it kind of sounds like there is a nail in my tire just not as much of a clicking noise. But that is he pattern I hear while driving.

no my clutch was grabbing fine but sounds like the same thing your going through... i dont know how mechanically incline you are but try this-

1. drain your oil out of your car and remove the oil pan
2. turn your wheels all the way to the right so you can get access to the crank pulley (18mm socket i believe dont remember) you should be able to see the flywheel and the rods and all that stuff
3. (2 person job) rotate the crank pulley so you can hear the noise. press on the flywheel firmly while the crank is being rotated if the noise stops there then it the flywheel and clutch.
4. while your down there check your rods and bearings too. if it all checks out to be ok then looks like the tranny is the problem.
5. clean the oil pan and re silicon the edges (5 bucks at auto zone) and bolt it back on let stand for 30 min or so add oil and should be good as far as putting back together.

but good luck and check thoroughly hope this helps...

I'm not the greater mechanic but I can typically get the job done with guidance. Thanks for the pointers, this will help a ton. Roughly how long will that process take?

Yeah i thought I may be the exhaust, I put a new dp on but it doesn't sound anything like exhaust pop. And as far as a piston ring, it does it at all rpms not just higher rpms
