Sounds like it's not working. Mine did that when it wasn't running.

If you pull the cap off and look down into the neck you should easily be able to see bubbles coming up. Or just siphon a little out until it's at the bottom of the neck and it should REALLY be sloshing around.

Make sure you're hitting it on the metal part of the motor and not the plastic part which houses the impeller.

You acutally want to hit the pump by the brushes, which are all the way at the back end, where the harness plugs in. That's the only thing hitting it does, lets the brushes move back into contact with the armature until they wear down more.

Ok so i just brought my car back to chevy because i thought my pump was blown and i still have my factory warranty blah blah blah, long story short, the guy just told me that everything checks out fine. yet i have low coolant in the resivar with little to no flow, i can not hear the pump turn on when the key is put to the "on". and my car feels sluggish....hmmm

the answer is there pumps die too, its a common problem.
the brushes in the motor ware out(just like all electric motors) i do believe the brush they used in this particular motor were too soft for the application. iv noticed in applications were the pump runs non stop there is failure around 60-80 thousand miles. In most vw/Audi/merc and so on apps the pump is used as a secondary pump.the pump and cycled on and so they tend to last longer.

the interment problem is due to carbon dust (from the brush) caking up inside the motor, the dust prevents the brushes from sliding in their guide and thus prevents them from making contact with the commutator , when you hit the motor you jar the brushes back into place, but once the brushes ware you loose contact again.
best thing to do is to take the motor apart and clean it if the brushes are still good. but its not a novice task.
heres my write up...

I checked mine, it doesn't seem to be doing anything. The engine hasn't blown up yet. I don't have IAT guages anyway so I suppose I won't know if its about to melt down.

I wonder if its ever worked, I've always thought the motor was sluggish. My fastest 1/4 mile was 14.59 @ 99.453

I'll hit it with hammer tomorrow when its daylight and if that works I'll order a new one Monday.

So when does this become a recall too?
