Making my own heat exchanger

So I'm the kind of Guy that likes making parts work that I find in cheap junk yards. Today I found a trans cooler on a 6.0 diesel that I'm going to use as a second heat exchanger. The cooler is about 1foot high by about 1 1/2 feet wide. Since its supposed to cool trans fluid which is thicker than water it should cool water better and flow better. I'm also going to install a 10inch slim fan on the front of it. Ill be doing this in the next couple of days and will had pics when I'm threw. What do you all think of this? any ideas or suggestions? feel free to chime in.

I also found this coolant reservoir bottle off a salene mustang I'm thinking about adding on.

Since it's a second heat exchanger I'd say go for it. I wouldn't use it as the sole heat exchanger because you don't know how it will perform. Just make sure you clean it out good as tranny fluid in the intercooler system probably wouldn't be good

Yea I planed on flushing it out really good I'm just seeing how it works since I got the parts for free any ways (I used to work at the junk yard) I figured since I have no cooling mods and limited cash I would see how well it works

What are the inlet and outlet diameters of the transmission cooler? That would be where your restriction is since everything else is plumbed to 3/4".

See I was worried about this too because the inlet and outlet is 1/2 but that's not to much smaller and didn't think it would restrict it to much what do you think

As you can see from the pic below the bottle is 3/4 and the Rad outlet is 1/2 really don't look that much smaller to restrict a hole lot

Stock LSJ intercooler end plate, pump and heat exchanger are all 3/4". You will be knocking this down two imperial sizes to 1/2". This is going to be way to restrictive and will cause problems.

Pretty cool man, I like the idea. Do you use HPT or have an interceptor? Just to see the difference in IAT2's would be cool.

What kind of problems you think ill run into? From looking at the 3/4 hose and the trans cooler it don't seem that much smaller. I also stuck the cooler in the bumper to see if it fits and from the looks of it it fits great and would even be able to use its stock hangers to mount it.

I don't have a interceptor but I do have a scan tool that will monitor the iat I will post results when I'm threw. As long as I don't find out that the inlet and outlet is to restrictive. I have spoke with a friend of mine that builds drag cars and he said I should be fine this Guy was even on pinks with the fastest mustang ever ran on pinks

As you can see from these pics the brackets on each side will bolt perfect to the back of the bumper bolts with new holes drilled and cut down the brackets a bit.

Still don't understand why I'm just dreaming when this cooler is bigger than both the cobra he and zzp he. Should work great unless the inlet and outlet do restrict it. I don't see that happening though as long as all the other hoses are 3/4 and I'm not restricting it going into the end plate. In theory water moves faster when you reduce the diameter because more pressure is built. Now if I end up putting this on. It is possible that I could build to much pressure in the system and that might turn into a problem but isn't that what the 5lb cap if for to release to much pressure being built in the cooling system

keep in mind the smallest point in the intercooler system is the orfices in the ends of the cores, and those are around 1/4". the 1/2" inlet and outlet arent going to cause a big issue.

yes but to much restriction can have the opposite affect in witch it can actually create heat which is undesired
