Modification to K&N Intake

If i buy the K&N Typhoon for the 2.0 I realize it will most likely throw a CEL light...only because of the filter pretty much....so what if i buy one of those cleaning kits...clean all the oil off the filter, than just re-oil the outside (since the K&N is lubricated inside and out) I have heard people with the Redlines are doing this with their K&N's because they all throw CEL's and did this and no CEL??????

ok im thinking that the k&n is throwing a cel because the ecu thinks the motor is running lean due to more air flowing in... im not thinking the typhoon is having the problems with oil getting on the maf...

$10 says its the oil on the MAF sensor causing the CEL.

Buy new or clean MAF

So, take the chance on cleaning the MAF or just spend the $70.00 and buy a new one? What to do.

wasn't oil in my case. I took the k&n off and reinstalled the stock unit cel went off right away. If it was oil on the maf it wouldv'e stayed on. Then I Put the k&N back on and the cel came back on. Plus I just installed the revit up piggyback kit and no more cel.

the common demoninator - K&N filter....I dunno to be honest. The guys at the dyno shop says it is a problem with the mustangs they see. They said its the oil on the MAF, clean it and it goes away. Since I don't own one, I cannot say that and be 100% positive thats the problem.

i got a cel ONE time and three good runs later it was off and hasnt been seen since. the oil on the filter has nothing to do with the code we are getting. if the maf was covered in oil, we would like get a running to rich problem do to i sensing that there wasnt ENOUGH air coming in. either that or the motor would start to run really bad. i have seen where oil off a k&n has done this, but just cleaning the maf and sticking it back in wont just make the code go away. the pcm has to complete a check cycle 3 times of a normal running range and then it will turn the light off.

I am wondering if the CEL's that have been going off on some intakes are due to the location (such as what state you are in and the elevation and temp. Combined have varied effects on a cars performance). Some people say that thier Injen does not have a problem throwing a CEL and for the most part I hear it more from those who have the K&N. I am currently in New Jersey and will get my Injen soon. When its installed i will reply if I threw a CEL or not. In case anyone is wondering who does not have an exhaust yet. I got my Magnaflow exhaust installed and it is awsome. Deeper idle, Loud when driving hard, and quiet when just cruising.

Zero Cel's with my K & N. Not one, ever. I love it. I used the screws that came with it and didn't not unplug the battery(trunk was full of junk and I was too lazy). LOL

The oil should have nothing to do with a cel. my buddy is a k&n pro rep and has witnessed them do tons of experiments where they poor there liqiud over a mass air sensor and have it not throw off any of the voltage readings. Ive spoke to him about the problems you guys are getting and he wasn't sure what could cause it.

Not likely. The whole issue of oil sticking to the MAF sensor on certain vehicles is due to overoiling with the recharge kit. I've never once heard of a stock, factory pre-oiled K&N Filter screwing up a MAF sensor. They are precisely oiled from the factory, there isn't even enough excess oil to come off of the filter in the first place.

The issues arrises when people clean their filters and use the recharge kit, and they douse the thing with excessive amounts of air filter oil. They reinstall it practically dripping wet, and (what a surprise), some of the oil gets pulled into the air intake and sticks to the MAF. That scenerio can be easily avoided by following the instructions and using the proper amount of air filter oil to recharge the filter.
