Muffler Selection? Help! Want clean sound

So instead of a boxed up catback kit i wanted to be able to tailor for the sound i wanted to i first started after my cat went out by replacing the downpipe with a:

ZZP 2.5" Catless DP

Immediately did not like the sound, way to raspy on the bottom and so loud on the top i sound like a hornet car and could barely hear the blower.
So decided to throw a glasspack resonator in there with some new tube and see what it did so i added:

Thrush (holley) glasspack resonator

Eh, it sounds MUCH better now. Dont mind the idle sound and sounds decent below 3k RPM's.

BUT IT still doesnt sound right!

So now i want to swap the stock cobalt muffler for something that is going to shut her up a bit and let the beautiful blower sound run free again.

Im wondering what you guys have used and what has had good success with the LSJ motor?

*Also would it be worth it to pull the DP out and weld in a CAT? Have full shop capabilities

Thanks guys!

Adding a cat will solve your problems. LSJs are almost always unbearably loud catless.

Try to find the largest resonator possible as well, to replace the glasspack, like the new ZZP Whisper series.

I personally have a magnaflow cat, 24" magnaflow res and a magnaflow muffler with 2.5" piping.....its defiantly loud and has a bark but can be reasonably quiet.

Thanks for being so cool...

I've searched seen 1000x threads on exhaust setups and what people suggest. Since im not a 12 year old looking to save some money on his rice burner i felt it was appropriate to start a thread to discuss the custom options.

Using the search comes back to the same thing: Dynomax Turbo Muffler

But i am wanting some more opinions as i build the exhaust out

Thanks guys considering putting a magnaflow cat in the DP, anyone have experience with there universal line or have another suggestion?

If you get the magnaflow cat get the heavy metal cat. They last longer then the ceramic ones.

I loved my Dynomax super turbo muffler when I had one. My exhaust kind of sounded like a slightly louder version of the stock exhaust. Though I also run a catted DP.

I had a Dynomax super turbo at one point. After 5K miles, one of the inside baffles blew out and lodged itself near the exit. Took a lot of effort to get it out of there, and it sounded like **** from then on. Not sure if anyone else has had issues with them, but just an FYI for you in case you have any problems or if it starts sounding buzzy.

I'm running a Greddy muffler now and couldn't be happier, they seem to hold up a lot better than other brands...i've used Magnaflow, Flowmaster, Dynomax in the past, none lasted longer than 10-15K before the packing deteriorates or baffles blow out.

So..you one stock exhaust with a cattless DP?
replace the stock resonator with a good size glass pack, the stock resonator is actually a hallow, there is no packing, its just there to tune the sound not make it quieter.

I have a 4-to-1 pacesetter, no cat stock mid section and a flowmaster.
A good equal length header will actually tune the sound, it will still be loud , but will sound a lot better.
And the nice thing about the flowmaster is its Farly quite at idle.

I looked into these. Sound control is am important consideration for me, since I have an hour long drive each way to work, and my Cobalt is my DD. Listening to a fart tube droning away for two hours every day would drive me straight up the wall.

I am leaving the rest of my exhaust system stock, and only changing the muffler. I'm planning on a 250-ish whp build, and would need over 500 cfm of exhaust flow (2.2 cfm per hp as a rule of thumb). The Super Turbo just doesn't cut the mustard (the best flowing offset model only flows 410 cfm).

They're a great muffler if you have duals, but none of the offset inlet/outlet models flow enough for our cars. There is one straight-through Super Turbo that flows around 510 cfm, but it's about $200 and doesn't look to fit our cars very well.

I ended up going with the Dynomax Ultra Flo SS muffler on my car. Since large diameter outlets cause drone issues, I went with a 2.25" muffler with a plain 2.5" outlet.

On the stock exhaust, it sounds throatier and quite a bit louder, but has near zero rasp and drone. For the amount of flow it's capable of, the sound control is very good, and it doesn't sound corked up like Super Turbos do. I believe it flows around 700 cfm, so plenty for what I plan to do with my car. They're all stainless, and are only about $100 new. I'm so impressed with this muffler that I'm going to look into a couple of them for my other car, which is much more built than my Cobalt.

It may be worth your while to consider the Ultra Flo SS.

And on a side note, I was surprised to learn that the Flowmaster 40 series flows almost exactly the same as the Super Turbo, despite being noisy as hell. It just goes to show that noise doesn't always equal flow.

Hmm so the greddy has got the same noise control the dynomax had? Any videos you have?

I have places an 18" glass pack thrush in there and it sounds ALOT better below 3k rpm. But still has a lot of crackle in downshift and is still ridiculous about 3k rpms

It's really seeming like taking te dp out and welding in a new cat my be necessity?
Anyone out there achieved good sound while remaining catless? (Sound clip would be awesome!)

Corsa. Loud when you want it. No drone when you don't.

I've yet to see one response from you that doesn't sound make you sound like a complete douchebag. If you don't like people reposting things, ignore them. You saying something that makes you sound like an ass isn't going to teach them anything.

On the sand car I run a header right into a hush power racing muffler. No pipe. Even the dyno shop guys said that everybody in the shop loved the sound. I plumbed a 5" intake to a huge filter that sits behind my head and I think the whine is as loud as the pipe at times. Sometimes the pipe is all you hear but when WOT the whine is loud. Sometimes when it's wide open and bogging down the whine is really weird sounding. It sounds like its chewing itself to bits but still works. I don't know why anybody would want more of that sound but then again it's right next to my helmet.

Excuse me? Is that response to me?
When there is a real discussion about a setup unique I find it immature to troll the thread to be the big man on the block.
Thank you for everyone's response getting ready to pull the setup for rebuild!

That's interesting my favorite sound is that bitchy eaton whining. Ill have to poke around into a hush power muffler, happen to have a link to yours? Also a pic of that 5" intake would be awesome!

Hushpower has been around for a while and is popular with 4 cyl race cars like Miatas because of the flow and sound. A regular V8 muffler sounds ruff on a 4 or 6 cylinder but these use a different way to muffle sound that works well on these engines. Flow Master just bought the company and they are called Flowmaster pro series now. If you can't beat them buy them. They are being used on their new Mustang and Camero cat back systems. It's not quiet but it sounds smoother the harder you push it not louder and raspy. As far as pics... Is that possible from an I Pad?

@Incognito, it wasn't directed to you at all, i just clicked on the wrong response button.
To be honest, it was directed at the Belvedere person. I've never seen them respond to somebody without sounding like an ass.
