Honestly... the stock muffler is the only "problem" area with the stock exhaust. The piping is plenty big enough. In fact, the GMPP exhaust is actually smaller than the stock exhaust.

I'd say go for the muffler... find a tip you like... and get her welded up.

depends on what kind it is... I how big is the cut-out in the bumper anyways? I wonder if we could fit something like dual 2" tips on there... would look sweet IMO.

Well since I'm only gonna have the car for 1 more year, I'm doing the muffler only on mine.....I just want a different exhaust tone & it's A LOT cheaper

$98 SHIPPED for this Magnaflow Stainlees Street Series Muffler (part #14829):

If I get it by the end of this week and get it put on, I'll post up some pics and let you know how it turned out

maybe not that much, but take a good look at the stock muffler (and the fact that it is, i believe the same muffler on all GM small cars) and tell me you don't think uncorking the exhaust would make a big diff. The fact is that the stock muffler is a HUGE restriction...the piping should be fine...already 2 1/2". just my .02

thats where the restriction is.

My magnaflow 14" stainless steel 2.5" inlet/outlet muffler comes in tomoro. and im taking it to the muffler shop to have a 2.5" custom cat back put on as well. ill post pics and what not on wednesday or so! *** on a side note, if you get the magnaflow muffler, the guys at the muffler place said to make sure that i got the 14" muffler, because the 18" would not fit. Just a little FYI! hope i helped.

The GMPP system is 2.25" as well... and it's shown a 10hp increase on the dyno.

really?
so all of us who have done the gmpp catback put the exact same size piping back in?!?
what would be the point of that?

its hard to say an exhaust is X.XX really, because the stock one has alot of different size piping....
including crush bends.
at points its even <2inch.

which is where the gmpp gets its gains. manderal bends and an overall larger piping, with less bottlenecks

I didn't buy the muffler for any performance gains........I just want a different exhaust tone

I couldn't justify spending $400+ for a cat-back on a car I'll have less than a year

The stock piping is 2.5" and then it reduces down to 2.25" before it goes over the rear axle.

Most people on a budget just leave the stock 2.5" piping and then replace the factory 2.25" and have 2.5" welded on from the axle back & have a new muffler put on.....that's a cheap way to do a 2.5" cat-back on these cars. And if you read people's sigs that say "2.5" axle back custom exhaust".....that's what they did.

BUT the real restriction is before the cat-back anyways and that is the cat/downpipe on these cars. I'm not gonna mess with that though

The muffler I got has a 14" case, but the overall length comes to 24" (3" pipe on the back, 14" length body, and then 7" tip)

I have a little bit more room to work with on my car since the Cobalt has a shorter bumper than the Redline

AND I will DEFINITELY post pics!

most likely...wouldn't be expecting any ungodly power gain, but should help to open things up a little bit...

The magnaflow 18" muffler fits perfect, thats what i have on my car.I wanted the longest muffler possible that would fit on the car.The longer it is,the less raspy it will be.Part number:14256

Wheres your proof the muffler alone doesnt add any power? The stock exhaust diameter is perfect. You just have to get rid of that bottle neck right before the axle.
