Near void warrenty caused by K&N CAI
Near void warrenty caused by K&N CAI
So i had my car in at the local dealership for a rattle i was hearing in the sun roof. The tech had trouble finding the noise so they went looking for the problem in the engine bay.. they ended up finding my CAI with a deep scratch from rubbing up against the ECM. I have the area circled on the picture below(borrowed from the gallery). I dont know if my intake is missaligned or if its faulty but the tech said had the scratch gone through the intake tube my warrenty woulda been nill due to unfiltered air inside the intake manifold. As of right now I have cardboard sitting between the ECM and intake tube until i can get in to realign it, or worst case scenario put the stock airbox back on. I'm glad it only cost me $140 for labour instead of a void warrenty, learn from my mistake and check to make sure your intake isn't rubbing!
Exactly. What the hell. You should not of paid ****. You need to tell them to pay you back. Looking for a sunroof problem has nothing to do with your engine air. If your engine would of given a code or broke down because of some reason your intake messed up then they would not fix that specific problem under warnity. What is up with that BS.
They told me that the rattle was actually coming from the intake rubbing and just resonating through the sunroof when its open. They wouldn't let me take it for a drive to see if the rattle was fixed or not, he said they cant release the car until i pay so i paid and booked an appointment to take the foreman for a drive so i can show him that its not the intake and actually is the sunroof, just like i told them. So I'll show them that the rattle was not from the CAI and work on getting a refund after the drive. I am glad though that they caught it before the ECM rubbed through the intake and caused some real problems.

Sounds like a way to try and screw you. They seen something they did not like, and wanted to blame your intake for the prob. I would say go back, show them. Make a big fight about it. You know the only way I get anywhere with dealers is acting like I'm going to kill someone if they don't fix their F%^&$& mistake. You are right though, good thing they seen that. I took a rubber hose, cut it in half and used it for a brace on both sides of my second gen injen. Works great. The intake won't even move from side to side at all. Good luck, hope it all works out.
threaten to take make a case against them with the better business bureau. you got RIPPED OFF. that is complete and utter bullshit
you should not have been charged anything. the sunroof rattle is a warranty fix. it is a common problem, and has nothing to do with your intake

And for everyone bashing the mechanics I AM SURE YOU GUYS DON'T WORK FOR FREE. If they spent 1 hour on it with chassis ears trying to find the noise don't you think they should get payed. In a car noises travel and are very hard to find. and I am sure that the intake rubbing on the ecm was making a noise. poss not the noise the car was brought in for but the mechanic did find a noise which he thought the customer was complaining about.
Dude where did you take your car? K if the rattle is still there take it back and they will fix it. for free. Talk to the service manager if the rattle is still there. let the forman rt it with you and show him the noise. You should have went for a ride with the forman before you paid to show him the noise was still there with the insulation between the ecm and the air fiter tube.If you can show him the noise then talk to the service manager and he should give you a refund. If the car is still under 60,000kms.The rattle diagnosis should be covered.

thats pretty bad. 2 hours for looking for a rattle. they shouldnt have even started looking in the sunroof, but takin the car for a test drive to make sure. that is their fault for not troubleshooting.
wow... $140.... i would have raised a lot of hell. it's too late now i think. even if it was in the sunroof, why did that take them 2 hours. even so, a sunroof should be a warranty fix and they didnt fix it! on top of that u got charged! :O
they gotta charge for their time when they need to.... it sucks, but they do. when it is a warranty issue tho and they give you a low blow by pinning it on your intake, ugggg.
my hood was wearing through my injen intake and i was aware of the issue. the service guy kindly told me that the intake was rubbing and i needed to do something about it when i got a rattling door handle replaced. that's how a dealer should act.

i mean hell. lets say you replace a clutch and run into trouble that was your fault. you wouldnt charge that extra time. you would charged based on the estimated time it should take. same thing goes here. the mechanics spend 2 hours looking for a rattle. they do not find the source. but IN THIS CASE they pin it on the intake. hmmmmmm....
My K&N sits real close to the ECM too. There really isn't a good way to adjust it to fix the issue, at least there wasn't when I tried to do it. I used a part of that split rubber tubing they give you with the kit and put it on the ECM fin so that the two won't rub. That reminds me though I should check mine.
You should have told the dealership that if the engine mounts weren't so shitty that it wouldn't rub. At high rpms that thing really moves around too much.
PS-What the heck are you doing with the sunroof open in Calgary in January?

maybe not. but if the rattle truely isnt fixed, he got screwed. and assuming you are a mechanic, you would charge 2 hours of labor looking for a rattle? that's a lot of time. you have to take responsibility if you customer is still not happy. GM is not known for customer satisfaction :-\

by the way $140 isn't 2 hours labor it is a little over 1.0hrs at $112/hr door rate.
But yeah, I've already got an appointment to take the foreman for a ride, I asked if i could drive the car before paying to ensure that the rattle was gone, but he said he couldn't release the car with no payment. oh and when i stopped by the foreman was already off work. Shagganapi has always been good to me, I liked being able to trust a dealership
There is no way you should have been charged for that. I'd also be willing to bet my full weeks paycheck that a set of chassis ears never touched your car. Also, $140 is probably one hour of labor, not two. The dealership I worked for charged that anyway. Also, as a rule of thumb, if your car is brought in, and a problem is found (that is not under warranty, or you decide not to repair after diagnosis) expect to always pay 1 hour worth of diagnosis time.
Yes they are being ******** about the intake and charging you for something they shouldn't, but technically they can. Alls the tech had to say is that he diagnosed the noise as coming from the intake rubbing the ECM, and since you didnt take a ride with him when you first dropped the car off to specifically point out the noise, that the noise you hear wasnt present on his test drive. He gets paid an hour for diag, since its not under warranty, you have to pay it.
Now when you go back, hes going to hear the noise that you hear, and will fix it under warranty. This way it isn't a comeback, he still gets paid for it, and you get the rattle fixed. I wouldnt expect to get your money back.
